Vernal Pool Print at Henne Winter Festival XII

Vernal Pool
"A seasonal body of standing water that typically forms in the spring from melting snow and other runoff, dries out completely in the hotter months of summer, and often refills in the autumn. Vernal pools range from broad, heavily vegetated lowland bodies to smaller, isolated upland bodies with little permanent vegetation. They are free of fish and provide important breeding habitat for many terrestrial or semiaquatic species such as frogs, salamanders, and turtles."  This from The Free Dictionary by Farlex.

Gorman has several vernal pools.  If I am not mistaken, they are all man made.  They completely fit the definition above.  I have seen them completely dried up.  I have seem them full and over flowing.  I have seen them partially full.  I have seen the little salamanders which live there before emerging.  I have seen tadpoles, frog and toad.  I have see Dragonfly and Damselfly larvae.  I have seen mosquito larvae and much else that I can not think of right now.

This is a print of one of vernal pools.  It is what I call a faux metal print.  It is 18x12 and mounts on the wall in a standoff way.  Please see this to believe.  I think that you will glad you did.

Found Stones printed on Faux Metal

Found Stones
Once the insects stop coming out and the flowers die and the birds head south, I walk the stream looking at stones.  I wonder what they are and how they arrived there.  Once in a while I see interesting colors.  This print contains pink and turquoise colored stones.  The media enhances the effect.  I do this in November, December, January and February.  It is fun to organize the image and capture it.  This has been a very popular image, a must see!

The Henne Winter Festival XII has many beautiful things as you can see.  Come and view my prints as well as the other art.  You'll be glad you did!

Metal Prints at Henne Winter Festival XII

Iris and Grass Flumes
I have been learning about light.  It was a factor in both of these images.  The Blueflag Iris grows around the pond at Gorman.  This was a morning shot with the light on the flower and the pond, background, in shade.  It created a coloration that decorators love!

The grass is Eulalia Grass.  We have only a few plants at Gorman.  I think that it is a common landscaping plant.  The seeds and "parachutes" form in early November.  This clump is located such that the sun hits the flumes while the background is in shade.  I used a long lens which causes the background to be blurred.  I love the way the light on the grass makes it jump off the print in a pleasing golden hue.  A must see!

Faux Metal and Real Metal

Faux Metal and Real Aluminum
The print on the left of the grass flumes is on Simply Eligant Metal Chrome Paper.  The print of the sunflower on the right is on Booksmart Ready-to-print aluminum.  You have to see these prints to appreciate the effect of the media upon which they are printed.

I began my interest in printing on metal over a year ago.  I had noticed "metal prints" advertised in my Outdoor Photographer magazine.  I was curious about it and ordered some prints as Christmas gifts.  I thought they were beautiful.  I liked the standoff mounting very much.  I began experimenting with the SE paper mentioned above.  It really makes the highlights sparkle.  I developed a standoff mounting of my own.  Unfortunately, my mount did not work with Mary's mounting system.  You can't drive a nail in it.  She did not hang any of them for that reason.  I took 14 prints down to her but she had only space to display 5.  Ask her to show you the rest.  They are all beautiful!  I have taken some modifications to the mount down to her so that she can hang them when space opens up.  I want you to see the standoffs in action.

Henne's Winter Festival XII

GNC Sunrise Metal Print
The little sunrise print is the one I'm talking about.  It is one that I chose to print on metal, aluminum, i. e.

I first heard about printing on actual metal in an article written by Windy Erickson editor of Photo Technique Magazine.  It was in the March/April issue and was titled:  "Untarnished Dreams: Metals for Digital Printing."  In the article she mentioned ready-to-print Booksmart Metals.  I chose the Satin Gold from the sampler I ordered from Booksmart for the GNC Surise metal print.  It makes the reflected light on the clouds literally jump out at you.  You have to see it to appreciate the effect.  I think this print displays best when it is not quite in the direct light, just as Mary Henne has displayed it.  It draws in your eye so that you can not miss it.

There are many nice works of art at the Festival.  Please stop by to see, appreciate and maybe even purchase them.

Effect of the Polarizing Filter

Pine Tree, Oak Tree
I saw this scene earlier in my walk.  It was behind tall prairie grass and I could not get high enough to shoot it.  I finally found a perspective though the light ad changed.

Pine Tree, Oak Tree
Both of these are HDR series shots.  The second one has the Circular Polarizor added.  I notice better saturation in the trees and sky.

Hornet's Nest

Hornet's Nest
I was aware of this nest last summer.  It was pointed out to me by a friend.  I thought about trying to photograph it from a distance but could not think of an agreeable, between me and the hornets, angle.  It has started to loose the paper covering in some places.  You can see the internal arrangement.  The cells are arranged in rows with ample space for the hornets to move to the exit for an attack on the photographer or anything else.
