Sandstone

Sandstone
Sandstone is an easy one to recognize.  It is a sedimentary rock and you can see the layers laid down in this sample.

I once owned a building with sandstone foundations.  I read that such construction is common around the world.  It is easy to shape and can be carved into a statue, for example.  Its high absorbency makes it great for beverage coasters.  Sandstone has been used in France to make oil lamps.

Slaty Skimmer Dragonfly Male

Slaty Skimmer Dragonfly Male
I have noticed these dragonflies first in the morning this summer.  They are so common at Gorman I almost regret when I see them.  They are beautiful, though; and I love looking at them when I am not looking for something else.

Slaty Skimmer Dragonfly Male
They usually buzz my head while I am sitting near the edge of the pond.

Slaty Skimmer Dragonfly Male
They form a mating wheel, not pictured, with the female and fly around with the male driving.

Silver-spotted Skipper

Silver-spotted Skipper
This butterfly is common in our area.  I read that it has one brood per year in the mid-west.  The female lays one egg on a caterpillar host plant.  The egg hatches into a caterpillar and eventually forms into a chrysalis in which form it overwinters.  I would like to look for legume plants, hosts, to find a chrysalis.

Hematite

Hematite
Hematite is the man ore of Iron.  One of its colors is red.  It is used in rouge and ochre, a clay colored by varying amounts of hematite.  When used in a dye, the color is permanent.

Hematite
This particular sample came from New York.

Hematite is used to make iron and steel.
