Blushing Knock-out

Shrub Rose Blushing Knock-out
I am working on my website on these rainy days.  My HTML editor, Microsoft Expressions 4, tells me that I have hyperlinks with problems.  While trying to figure out what the problem is, I came across this one and the one from yesterday.  I have been unable to get out and I thought that I might re-share this one from 6-27-2006.  It took my breath away when I viewed it.  I hope it has the same affect of you.

Wild Carrot

Queen Ann's Lace
The Wild Carrot is so common we hardly bother to look at it.  I have been observing the Wild Carrot since the fall of 2008.  I noticed how its seeds and umbel work.  In the spring of 2009, I began watching it again and noticed the pink fringe of its bloom.  Not all of them have the pink.  I really like the subtlety of the color.  We see so much green in the summer that I decided to show it in B&W except the pink.  I used the Sigma 105 mm f/2.8 macro lens for this shot.  I used Helicon Focus to combine 20 shots for adequate depth-of-field.

More False Turkeytail

False Turkey-tail
I have already shown the fungus at this location but not closeup.  I vowed to return and work it more and here it is.  Note the moss growing on the tree trunk.

False Turkey-tail
This is growing further down the same log.  It appears that they have grown together forming something resembling bacon.

Plunge Pool

Plunge Pool
The stream is dry these days.  It is like a wide highway.  While walking it, I came upon this pool of water.  It was deep, I estimate waist high on me.  I used a limb to measure it.  It is full of minnows.  It was created by the water flowing over the log jam.  The turbulence created, washed the gravel out and down stream.  The gravel in this stream seems deep.  I have wondered where all the sand comes from.  That seems to be my answer.

Switchgrass

Switchgrass
I have been admiring this grass for some time.  I have images of it from earlier times of the season.  I happened to notice the black/dark brown grass within.  I was able to obtain help with the Switchgrass ID from Jason Larson.  Thanks Jason.

I can't find the dark grass to ID it.  I don't know what happened to it.  Jason reminded me that Switchgrass is used to make ethanol and butanol.  It is one of our prairie grasses.

More False Turkey-tail

False Turkey-tail
I think these mushrooms lovely.  They come in many different color arrangements.  I decided not to clean off the leaves.  I thought it a nice seasonal aspect of the image.

False Turkey-tail
While I was working the light changed.  The sun was rising and the light became contrasty.  I needed to use a light modifier from that point on.

False Turkey-tail
While doing a setup I accidentally tripped the shutter and I liked this.

False Turkey-tail
The log was split and the mushrooms were growing on one side of it.  Again, I was tempted to remove the leaves but thought better of it.

False Turkey-tail
I thought the mushrooms growing in the split particularly lovely.  I am planning on doing more work at this site.

This setup required me to hold a light modifier at the other end of the log.  Of course, I could not reach and my remote release was not long enough.  Even if it were, I could not see where to hold the light modifier while standing down there.  I was using a wide zoom and the position was critical.  You probably know where this is going.  I used the CamRanger as a remote shutter release with a view of the subject.  I could hold the modifier at the exact place I needed it and release the shutter when I got it there.

Mini-Puffball Mushroom

Mini-Puffball Mushroom
I found this on a breezy overcast morning.  It was in the process of pushing up the earth under which it began forming.

I shot it with the CamRanger using a small step and f/2.8.  I captured over 500 images to stack this.  It was quite an undertaking for my computer but it succeeded.

Mini-Puffball Mushroom
I returned the next day and shot 65 captures at step size medium and f/5.6.

I found that with the sun shining that day I needed to use a light modifier to soften the light.

Mini-Puffball Mushroom
Then shot 8 captures using step size large and f/8.

I don't seem to see that much difference in the images.  Do you?
