Clinoptilolite

Clinoptilolite
Clinoptilolite was described in 1969 from Owl Canyon, San Bernardino, California.  That is a relatively late date for a mineral to be first decribed.

The sample above comes from Augoura, Los Angeles Co., California.  It is used in fertilizer and deodorant.

Clinoptilolite
It has an ion exchange affinity making it favored my scientists.  It especially exchanges easily with Ammonium.

Cherry Fuchsia

Cherry Fuchsia
This comes from our home in July, 2004.  It was a plant we brought in for the summer.

Most Fuchsias are native to South America.  North through Central America and Southern US their numbers diminish.  I think this bloom also embodies the color whose name is the same as the plant.

Tri-pod

Manfrotto 475B Tripod
From the focusing rail to the tripod, I appreciate adjustable devices.  Early in my learning, I had difficulty finding the subject in the camera.  I've since found that shining my flashlight through the viewfinder would project the light where the camera was aimed.  If it is aimed too high I can lower it easily with the post on this tripod which has teeth machined into it.  The crank moves it up or down, a wonderful asset when aiming the camera!

The legs are plenty long at 16.6 to 74 inches.  They be set close together as shown above or spread widely for a more steady stance.  It has a spirit level for setting it up levelly.  It is not the tripod to carry in the field long distances but is a magnificent addition to the studio.

Ferri-molybdite

Ferri-molybdite
I found the spelling: Ferrimolybdite on Wikipedia.  The mineral is an hydrous iron Molybdate.  This sample is from Salt County, Utah.  It is a product of the oxidation of  molybdenum, a word I came across related to aircraft.  It was the solution for the compressor blades in the German jet fighter, ME 262.  It lasted much longer and required fewer engine rebuilds than the metal used originally.  It has the sixth highest melting point of any element on Earth.

Ferri-molybdite
The first image displays 3.57mm at 6.58X.  This one displays 9.5mm at 2.43X.
