Horn Coral

Rugosa or Horn Coral
This is one I picked up in a local stream bed.  It lay around for some time and then I put it in Wood Bleach for two weeds to clean it up.  I took it with me when I went to the yearly show of the Richland Lithic and Lapidary Society at the fairgrounds last winter.  Tom Kottyan told me it was Horn Coral.  Thanks, Tom.

Rugosa
I read about it in Wikipedia.  Coral is formed by little animals that live in a warm shallow sea and excrete Calcium Carbonate which builds up around them.  This particular coral was formed by an animal that went extinct about 241 million years ago.  So, it is very old.  I assume that it grew when this area was under a sea.  I suppose that it could have been pushed down from Canada by the glacier but I wonder if it would be in such good shape if that had happened.  The above shot is the near microscopic view.

Rugosa
I think that I can see the little individual "houses" that the corals lived in.  Any comments?

Red Chalk or Loess

Chalcopyrite in Red Chalk?
This is the third of the three I removed from the batch.  It has something embedded in it which I think might be Chalcopyrite.  The surrounding material is about like chalk though it might be just slightly more course.

Loess?
You can see that it was in the same bag with the chalk.  I did not notice the white dust until later.  I meant to re-shoot it but did not get it done.  Again, Anyone knowing better than I would be welcome to comment.

Rocks Photography is Coming

Chalk
I purchased some rocks from the Laures last summer.  I finally got around to going through them recently.  I found three that I immediately pulled out.  This was one.  I read that chalk should have fossils in it but I could not see any in this shot.  This is a near microscopic magnification.

Crystal Tuff
I first thought this might be sulfur because of the yellow color.  It seems to have a yellow dust on it.  It did not have the characteristic odor.  It is not dense.  I tried to see if it would float in water like pumice.  It did not.  Crystal Tuff is the closest I could come in my field guides.  If anyone knows better than I do, please comment.

Bird Nest Box

Bird Nest Box
My wife, Carol, has a highly developed sense of decoration and color coordination.  Seldom do I make an image that really pleases her.  This is one that she likes.  The blue on the box is one of her colors in the living room.  My first shot of it was on a still frosty morning and it did not turn out but she liked it anyway.  I have been shooting this box in every way I can think of.

Bird Nest Box
I am waiting on other conditions.  She likes the weeds and I thought I would try to create something there that she likes.

Eastern Towhee

Eastern Towhee
It had been a frosty morning and this little guy was warming himself in the sun.  Notice how his feathers are puffed out.  He was very cooperative.  He/she was sitting on the branch using one foot.  Maybe the other was warming near his body.  I used a Sigma 50 - 500 mm lens mounted on a Manfrotto monopod and I stood in the open.  I tried to stay behind the camera and not make any sudden moves.  ISO 1600 gave me a 1/500 shutter speed which was fast enough mounted on the monopod.

Near Objects II

Gorman Nature Center
I had a better understanding of the challenge involved when I made this one.  I used a circular polarizing filter as you will note in the sky.  A circular polarizing filter on a wide lens, 10 - 20 mm in this case, can be a problem in the sky.  The field of view is wider than the effect of the filter.

I was successful with the teasel.  There was, however, an area around it created by the far focus shots.  I need to work with that.

You may note the track of my little yard cart which I use to carry my equipment.  I had just made my "cameo" appearance in the time-lapse that I was shooting that morning when I noticed this.
