Dragonflies

Slaty Skimmer
I think this is the only one of these I saw this year.

Widow Skipper
I saw almost none of these this year.  Normally they are very numerous.

Common Whitetail Female
Twelve-spotted Skimmer
I normally sit by the vernal pool and use these dragonflies for target practice with my camera.  I only sat by the pool a few times this past summer because there were almost none of these.

Twelve-spotted Skimmer
Painted Skimmer
This was a new addition for my collection of images.

Common Whitetail exoskeleton
The dragonfly has molted here.  It climbed out of the pool to this point after living under water for about three years.

Common Whitetail
Common Whitetail
Ruby Meadowhawk
This is one of the reasons I use flash on dragonflies.  The light on the thorax and head would not have been strong enough without it.

Damselflies and Dragonflies

Ebony Jewelwing Female
I saw almost none of these.  This is my only shot.  This is the largest damselfly.

Arrowhead Spiketail
This was a new addition to my collection of images this year.

Common Baskettail
Shadow Darner
These were very scarce this year.  We could still have them around.  I have seen some larger dragonflies flying but have not gotten close enough to identify.

Eastern Forktail
This damsselfly had just emerged from its exoskeleton.  It was waiting for its new exoskeleton to form.

Eastern Forktail
Slender Spreadwing
Most damselflies perch with their wings held over their body.  This is an exception.

Slender Spreadwing
We will continue with more of these tomorrow.

Least Skipper

Least Skipper
I came across this pair coupling much earlier this season.  I thought it interesting to observe.

Least Skipper
It seemed that others wanted to get into the act.

Least Skipper
The one on top was moving the pair around during this sequence.

Least Skipper
Least Skipper
I was surprised at how secure their coupling seemed  to be.  It did not break easily.

Butterflies

Monarch Butterfly
We had almost no butterflies this season at Gorman.  The larger butterflies were particularly scarce.  This is my only shot of the Monarch.

Red Admiral Butterfly
This is a butterfly that sometimes overwinters as an adult.  I saw almost none of these.

Peck's Skipper

This is usually a common butterfly but not this year.  It is small and you must be alert to see it.

Pearl Crescent Butterfly
We had a profuse number of these this season.  I wonder why.

Silver-spotted Skipper
This is a butterfly which rarely shows its wings open like this.  I caught this one after a rather cool night and it was warming in the sun.  I saw several of these this season.

Hobomok Skipper
I saw only this one.

Clouded Sulfur
This is one which was at least as common as in previous years.

Cabbage White
This is one that I hated when I grew cabbage in my garden.  I don't hate it any more.  I saw a few of these this year but not as many as in previous seasons.

Leonard's Skipper
I hope I have not shown you too many at once.  These, as I mentioned, are for most of the season.
