Airport Day 2012 part 1

Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker
Airport Day 2012 was last Saturday.  The weather was so hot, I decided not to go on Friday to film the plane's arrival.  This plane in the passenger version was the Boeing 707.  It also served as Air force One back in the day.  It looks different because they have added updated engines which are much larger in diameter.

Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker
It is a large plane which goes without saying.

C 27J Spartan
We have the 179th Air National Guard at Mansfield Lahm.  There is talk that we may loose it.  It would be another blow to a community already weakened by plant closures, etc.  They fly the C-27J.  It is a two engine version of the C-130 which they had before.  1.  Please go to www.ngaus.org  2.  Scroll down to "Write to Congress" and enter your zip code.  3.  Under "Action Alert" click on "Legislative Alert #12-10" (this is a senate only" letter)  4.  Complete the "Sender Information"  5.  Scroll down and click in "Send Message"

Changing Light

Sasha
I was sitting there at a recent family gathering listening to the conversation and even adding a little here and there.  Mostly, I was noticing the waning sunlight play on Sasha's face.  I had brought my camera so I went and got it.  Her head moved in and out of the light.  It was interesting to see if I could capture a shot at the right instant.  In the end, I asked her to look at Tiff and smile.

Sasha
I don't know if she moved into the light for this shot or if it just happened.  Either way, I really liked the outcome.

Timing is everything with changing light.  You can't keep your camera close enough.

Eastern Pondhawk Female

Eastern Pondhawk Female
I became fascinated by a certain spot along the shore of the Frog Pond this past spring.  I had shot a new bird, to me, there.  Later, I noticed that the dragonflies were busy there also.  They were ovipositing, laying eggs.  When they do that, they slow down their flying speed.  It gave me the opportunity to take my shot.  I used my Sigma 50 - 500 mm lens, and Canon 7D.  I set the auto focus to continuous.  I set Shutter Priority to 1/1000th.  The camera chose f/5.6.  This was the result.  I have not found this type of shot easy.  It is the only one I have this season.  I had lots of throwaways.

Sweetbrier

Sweetbrier
The Sweetbrier is just about past blooming at Gorman.  It has lovely petals and is loved by bees as you can see.

Sweetbrier
The blooms are slightly larger than the Multiflora Rose.  I think the two plants are related.  It looks much like a rose bush to me.  Girls like pink.  Girls buy pictures for their homes.  I hope you like it!

Living Area Detail

Living Room Detail
I was having coffee with Carol the other morning and was watching the light on her little table instead of the news.  I decided to get my camera.

I liked how the light was blushing the shells in the bowl.  It turned out to be too contrasty for my camera so I used a diffusing light modifier between the sun and the subject.  I am afraid that the light which captured my attention was gone by the time I got it all figured out.

Summer Grape

Summer Grape Tendril

I noticed this tendril the other morning as I walked down the trail.  It was at my eye level, a good thing for my sore back.  I thought its shape interesting so I photographed it.  I chose a medium telephoto, a Sigma 105 mm f/2.8 lens, to make the blurred background. I like the contrast between a sharp subject and a relatively smooth background.  I liked the way the light was emphasizing the coiled parts.  Of course, the colors of the background and subject are complementary.

I then changed lenses to a wider, Sigma 24 - 70 mm, f/2.8 lens.

Summer Grape Tendril Setup
The wider Sigma 24 - 70 mm, f/2.8 lens has a higher inherent depth-of-field, DOF, as you can see.  It also shows a wider angle which includes the Manfrotto rose holder I used to steady the stem.  The slight breeze precluded my using a high DOF technique using Helicon Focus software.  I felt that the slight breeze even using the rose holder, would cause problems in Helicon Focus so I opted for f/16 in both shots.  In the above shot, I could have used f/8 or f/11 giving a smoother blur in the background had I used the high DOF technique.
