Turquoise Rock

Turquoise Rock
Carol gave Lily a small bag of rocks which were polished.  When she got tired of them, she gave them to me.  I showed most of them in a recent blog.  This rock, because of the color, seem a good subject for further work.  I wanted to show as many properties in the image as I could.  The properties I noticed were color turquoise, translucent/transparent, shiny surface.

Turquoise Rock
I was not sure that the translucent/transparent property s showed well enought.

Camera setup for above

Turquoise Rock
I could see the transparent/translucent property s more easily with this shot.  It lacked the sheen on the surface.  The setup below helped to fix that.

I thought that I finally got to my goal with this capture.  I used my Logan Light Box for viewing slides as the bottom light.  I used a piece of black construction paper, cutting a hole under the rock slightly smaller than the rock.  The pertinent data related to this shot was:  mirror lock, smtih-Victor LB-20 Light Box Tent, logan light box, ec 0, fec - 1/2, a:b  = 1:1,  a either side, full hood on lens, sigma 105 mm macro lens, Canon EOS 7D.  This is a Helicon Series shot at f/8, 1 second.  Two Canon 420 EX slaves, 7D master.

I am wondering if this might be quartz with something else inside.

2012 Ricland Lithographic and Lipidary Society Show

Kay and Gay Abrams Jewelry
The Abrams are very friendly people.  They also had the fluorescent rocks display.  You may remember it from several weeks ago.  They also make very nice jewelry.  (click on any of the images to enlarge)

I sincerely enjoyed this year's show.  I was able to handle a meteorite.  It was quite dense and seemed heavy.  I suppose that is because it contained iron or nickel.

I was able to get help on the ID of rock I found in the bucket I bought at the silent auction last year.  What a deal!  It was Carnotite.

Carnotite
I read that it forms when ground water runs through uranium deposits.  It has radioactive properties and dissolves in acids.

I find myself wishing that I had access to my high school chemistry/physics lab on some of the ID's  Thanks Tom.

Airport Day part 3

1940 Ford Coupe Convertible Deluxe

This particular restoration won a national prize several years ago.  These cars get lots of TLC just in everyday life.  The hood was not open but I seem to remember that somewhere on the grill it said V8.  I assume that it was a flat head.  I don't know if this one has a stock engine or not.

1968 Corvette Convertible
The wheels sit wide apart but the narrow body is inside them.  The driver and passenger sit inside the wheel base.  I suppose that is for better cornering.  These cars seem timeless to me.

My brother, Craig, had a 1978 25th Anniversary Edition.  He gave me a ride.  I thought it was less than smooth.  He asked if I would care to drive it.  I don't think that I accepted his invitation.  I am glad that he did not show me how it performed.

As you might notice, I was there early before many cars arrived.  They kept coming in while I looked at the airplanes but my attention was elsewhere by then.  I enjoyed spending time with Gavin, Lucas, and Loudon and their daddy s.

Airport Day part 2

Experimental Aircraft
This was an interesting encounter.  He said that it took him about a year to construct the kit.

MyFiretruck.com
You can rent this fire truck for parties, etc.  They charge mileage out of Mansfield and there is a slight charge for each person or lift.  I did not know about this new business.

MyFireTruck.com
They were unable to rise above the level of the airport tower for safety reasons but it was still a great view as you may have noticed from some of the shots of yesterday.

The morning light was very nice and warm.  Sometimes the warmness adds to an image and sometimes not so much.

MyFireTruck.com
Which rendition do you like better?  I think that I like the more neutral one.  Tomorrow, the car show.
