Red-winged Blackbird Attack

Larry being attacked by the Red-winged Blackbird
The Red-winged Blackbirds like to nest around the pond.  We have so many that they even nest in the meadow.  The males, in particular, become feisty from the time the eggs are laid until the young are fledged and can care for them selves.  I am, by nature, a peace full creature until I am attacked.  At that point my ire rises.

I have been trying to demonstrate their aggressiveness in an image since "egg laying" time unsuccessfully.  The young are currently fledging and time is limited to make that capture for this season.  I decided to try a wide lens with a video:  Windows and AndroidApple  It is better than asking someone else to risk life and limb for the image.  LOL!  If you look closely, you may see the female fly from right to left across the bottom and later from lower left to upper center.

It will not win any awards but it was fun on a day when not much else was happening.

Slender Spreadwing

Slender Spreadwing
I liked this peep-a-boo pose when I processed it.  You barely see it from a distance.  In fact, you will probably miss it entirely unless you wonder what the photographer was thinking when he/she photographed this reed.  It reminds me of an inverted pyramid less stable on the bottom than you might hope.  You might miss the wings if you don't notice the blue eye.  It could be better executed, but I thought it worth showing for the interest and idea.

Song Sparrow

Young Song Sparrow
I think this one fledged not long ago.  I love to see and hear them sing.  This one accommodated me by landing on a leafless branch and staying put just a little longer.  They live in our area, North Central Ohio, throughout the year.

Last of Milkweed Creatures for Now

Small Eastern Milkweed Bug
This "true bug" is common on the milkweeds at Gorman.  Later in the season we will see them mating and reproducing.  They are almost impossible to miss when you look at a plant on which they live.

Happy Birthday Carol

Carol Eicher
She is sooo cute, I think.  As lovely today as the day I married her.  Today she celebrates her birthday.  Of course, I am not allowed to tell you how many.  I would show a more recent shot but it is hard for me to get her into the mood.

Happy Birthday, Carol!

Milkweed Creatures II

Monarch Female
It has been two years since I have had a confirmed sighting of the Monarch Butterfly at Gorman.  I was excited, needless to say, when I saw this one and a female, too.  She lit on the leaves lower down on this Marsh Milkweed plant also.  I suppose she was laying eggs.  It reminded me to begin looking for caterpillars.

Monarch Caterpillar
I began looking the very next day in a different location.  I found this young fellow munching away.

Monarch Caterpillar
I found yet another that same morning.

We have so many nice milkweed plants and it is so good to see them used my the monarch.

More Milkweed Creatures

Golden Northern Bumblebee
I have seen other's pictures of this species of Bumblebee but have never seen a live one.  I was pleased to add it to my collection.

Golden Northern Bumblebee
It likes nectar too.

The bees come out earlier in the morning than the butterflies and moths.  Sometimes they stay on the plant over night in which case they look wet in the morning unlike this one which was dry and fluffy.

Speaking of Milk Weed

Common Milkweed
We have quite a lot of Milkweed growing at Gorman.

Snowberry Clearwing Moth
When the Milkweed is in bloom, it draws many creatures, myself included.  In this case it is Marsh Milkweed.  Many come for nectar as did this hummingbird moth.

Southern Cloudywing
This skipper butterfly also came for nectar but also for the warming sunlight.
