Near Objects

GNC Frog Pond
I returned the second time to get this one.  It is a combination of bracketed exposures with various focusing points.  I used a Sigma 10 - 20 mm lens.  The lens has a good amount of DOF, depth-of-field.  I used only two or three focusing points in the distance.  As I came to focusing on the near objects, I focused on several cattails.  On the nearest cattail, I focused three or four times.  In my mind at present, I have the understanding that, even in a landscape with a wide lens, you must use macro focusing techniques on near objects.  The deep DOF becomes progressively less as you focus on near objects.

I do think that there is a limit to how close you can get to the near object.  My lens was not over two inches from the nearest cattail.  I used a rose holder to stabilize the cattail.  The far focused shots tend to leave a slight border around the near objects so you must be careful.  I might be able to eliminate some of the far focus shots which would help this problem.

I really like this shot.  I used a circular polarizing filter on it.  I like the light and how it washes the scene.

Intimate Landscape

Gorman Nature Center
I have been working on including a near object in my landscapes.  I learn by trying.  Some work and some don't.  This one worked.  It seems awfully cluttered but it works.  I think the near object, the pine tree, makes that happen.  What do you think?

Gorman Nature Center

Gorman Nature Center
We still had some leaves when I shot this one.  You might notice a little frost on the walkway rails.  The sun had not been on the visitor's center very long when I made this capture.

Gorman Nature Center

Gorman Nature Center
If you have ever visited Gorman Nature Center, you know that the front pond has an elevated walkway which is very popular.  People who come to run on the trails will pass over the walkway as part of their circuit.

I liked the teasel and cattails in the foreground with the walkway in the back.  In the very foreground you may notice the narrow-leaved willow herb I have discussed previously.

I love the early morning!  I like seeing the pond steam this time of year.  I like seeing the frost.

Where is the Grocery Store?

Sparrow
We look at the berries and seeds and think they are beautiful.  They are, but they are much more to the creatures which overwinter here.  It is their grocery store.  It is what keeps them alive during the harsh weather.

American Goldfinch

The goldfinches have been eating tall sunflower seeds.  When those are gone they will probably eat goldenrod seeds.

American Goldfinch
When those are gone, I am unsure what they eat.  They somehow survive the winter.

American Goldfinch
Some very kind people feed birds in their backyards.  If you do that, it is important not to stop during the difficult weather months because the birds get used to coming to your feeder.  It becomes their grocery store.

Bench, Pond, Steam Revisited

Bench, Pond, Steam
This is a sequel to a previously successful image by the same name.  This happened last Saturday, before, during and after sunrise.  The same conditions existed on Sunday and I made a time-lapse of it.  There are Windows Media Player and iPhone 4 versions.  I stayed with the developing light and conditions and shot until the sun was well up into the sky.

Bench, Pond, Steam
I am having trouble deciding which I like the best.

Bench, Pond, Steam
Which do you like the best?  Don't vote yet!  There are more coming tomorrow.  Let me know what you think.
