First To Fly Across The English Channel

Bleriot Monoplane

This aircraft was the first to fly from France, across the English Channel, in 1909.  It boasted 25HP engine.  That's the size of my son's riding mower engine.

The English quickly realized they must take measures to protect themselves in the event of aggression from East.  They started working on the Chain Home radar.  But they had time to refine their system during WW I.

Louis Bleriot built and sold his planes to England and other countries for WW I reconnaissance.  His planes were used extensively to train pilots.  Most if not all aircraft except Bleriot's were biplanes during the Great War.

Crocosmia Lucifer

Crocosmia Lucifer

This plant is in the iris family and is a small genus.  Lucifer is a cultivar, it has been developed in selective breeding.  The plant is endemic to Africa, grasslands, southern and eastern to Sudan.  They have bulbs resembling those of gladiolas.
