Brickcap Mushroom Continued

Brickcap Spore Print
I was so excited because this is the first spore print I have captured.  Wasn't it a good one?

Brickcap Spore Print 40x
The Swift microscope has three stages, 4x, 10x, 40x.  That times the 10x eye piece gives the magnification.  This is 40x.

The first two are top light which proved rather dramatic.  The bottom one was bottom light.

Brickcap Mushroom

Brickcap Mushroom
I was fairly excited when I found this one and I will tell you why tomorrow.

Brickcap Mushroom
We need to see whether the gills attach to the stem and how.  I think this shot shows that.

Brickcap Mushroom
We need to see the area of the stem where there might be an annulus, ring.  The veil beneath the gills was attached there.  This occurs during development when there is a sheet, veil, covering the bottom of the cap.  I think you can see that in this image.

Examining the Spores

Swift Microscope
I was able to rescue this microscope from destruction and have put it to good use.  I obtained a Canon Microscope Mount as you can see.  There is no aperture setting with this settup.  I use shutter speed only.  I also obtained an LED light for bottom light.  I use flash for top light.  You will see both kinds of light represented in my photography.

Don't try this at home unless you are exceedingly careful with the position the mount.  It it extends too far into the camera body, the mirror could hit it causing damage to the camera.

Deer Mushroom Spores at 40X

This is top light plus just enough bottom light for focus.

Deer Mushroom Spores at 400X

This is a focus stack.  I have not been exceedingly happy with the results because I do not see much if any improvement over the single exposure.  I am not quite finished exploring the concept.  I will get back with you if I learn anything.

This shot is totally bottom light, except ambient light.  I had to use a slower shutter speed here.

The ID guides occasionally discuss the shape of the spores and this would be where we could see that.

Deer Mushroom

Deer Mushroom
I found this one on a rotting cherry log, the other day.  The weather was below freezing and it was frozen.  I think the detritus is due the high winds the previous week when it was warm.

Deer Mushroom
The one in the image above was so frozen that I could not remove it.  This one, on the other hand, I was able to get loose.  I am making an effort to photograph the pertinent parts for ID.

Deer Mushroom Spore Print
I am collecting the spore print on a microscope slide for later examination.

Black Fungus Related Substance

Black Fungus Related Substance
We have looked at this log before.  The yellow substance, I believe to be Witches' Butter.  It has a black substance beneath it.  Now, I notice the black substance growing periodically around the edges of the log.  Because the black substance is beneath the yellow, I believe it to be related to the Witches' Butter in some way.  I will keep you updated.

Did I mention that the wood is American Elm?

Turkey Tail Mushroom

Turkey Tail
I have long wondered about the existence of the the Turkey Tail.  I thought, "If there is a False Turkeytail, there must be a Turkey Tail."  I think that I have found it.

Camera Setup for Turkey Tail
It does line up with the longitudinal line of the log.  I have found some that does not grow in that orderly fashion and have decided that it is not Turkey Tail.

Fly Agaric and Mold

Fly Agaric Mold
Life goes on even when the warm weather is gone.  It is a strong force.

Fly Agaric Mold
I am on a quest to obtain evidence of the spores on a mushroom, called "spore print."  I did not obtain it from this mushroom but did find mold growing on it.

Fly Agaric Mold
The nearly vertical parts are gills.  This is a cross section of the fly agaric.  the flesh is the part below the gills. The skin of the cap is below that and the mold is the green curve below that.

This image was captured from the view through the microscope at 40X.  I used the bottom light, just strong enough for focus.  I used a flash at the lower right for top light.  The light light at the lower right is a reflection.
