Prairie Grass AKA Indian Grass

Prairie Grass AKA Indian Grass
This image was captured in the AM at about sun up.  Gorman Nature Center boasts several prairie grasses because this area is on the edge of the more Western prairies.  Indian Grass is one of them.

Indian Grass

We see the inflorescence first.  It is a group or cluster of blooms.  Grass blooms are small enough that we need to take a second look before we actually see them.  Most if not all grasses have them.

Lepidocrocite

Lepidocrocite
This sample from Grubb Lake, W. Hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA is an iron oxide-hydroxide mineral.  It is commonly found among iron ore deposits.

Lepidocrocite
I used to think of iron and other ores as just a blob.  I'm surprised how many ores are worth a second more close-up look.

Lepidocrocite
This is the same sample at roughly the same magnification, 2.4X size on the sensor.  It looks to me like lava.

On this day 20 years ago, I married Carol May.  We are looking forward to 2018 and wish you the best.

Happy New Year 2018

Newborn Mantids
Just like these little mantids, 2017 is gone and 2018 is newborn.  It is a beginning in which we can find hope.  Carol and I wish you a happy prosperous new year, 2018.

When I think of New Years, I think of kraut and pork. I think of the Rose Parade, The Rose Bowl will be lackluster for me because my team did not get in.  Oh well, there is always the Rose Parade.

Lens Setup

Lens Setup
From top to bottom the components are:  1.4X tele converter, total 68mm extension, Sigma 105mm macro lens, 62mm to 58mm step down ring, 58mm to 49mm reversing ring, and finally Mamyia 50mm.  This setup yields 3.6X on the sensor, with a FOV (field-of-view) of 6.6 mm.

I am growing to think this is my setup which yields maximum usable magnification, MUM.  See Ron Pellar's explanation of MUM.

Anatase
This crystal is 3.6X on the sensor with a FOV of 6.6mm.  It was captured with the above setup.
