Squid Tails

This is a fossil of a squid that lived between 201.3 and 145 million years ago.  It was called the Jurassic Period and dinosaurs lived then also.

This sample comes from Wyoming which shows there was a sea there in the Jurassic Period.

Century Plant

The Century Plant, aka Agave americana, common names sentry plant, century plant,^[4] maguey, or American aloe.  I remember that Mom kept an Aloe growing in a pot in the windowsill. Its purpose was to sooth burns from cooking.  She called it Aloe Vera.  Wikipedia says that Century Plant is not closely related to other plants with Aloe in the name.

When the growing point opens, the impressions of the prickles can be seen on the other fleshy parts.  I read that a Century Plant may live for 10 to 30 years.  It blooms once at the end of its life.  Growing it for its blooms would not be a satisfying experience in my mind.  This plant grew in the succulent room and Kingwood Center in February, 2006.

I looked forward, when in high school, to producing the smell of rotten eggs in Chemistry,  Everyone in the building, a small one, could smell the unpleasant aroma.  I don't remember from Chemistry but I recently saw it burning on TV.  It burns with a blue flame after melting to a blue liquid.

I remember the formula for Sulfuric Acid.  H₂SO₄ is one of if not the most reactive acids.  I liked Chemistry.  My lab partner was Carol Robinson Miller.

I liked chemistry at Ohio State.  I really liked the newer electronic balances and labs.
