Stream Below Bridge 2

Old Stream Bed
The stream has been dropping sediment way up to bridge 3 and beyond.  I have been meaning to look into the cause for some time.  I think that I have found it.  The stream is blocked by a log jam and trash.

Delta
Delta

The water is forming a delta in this area because there is not much relief between the stream and the land.

Water Flowing Along Base of Frogpond Dam
The water is spreading out toward the Frogpond dam and is actually flowing along its base.

I am afraid the dam will wash out.

Trail North of the Stream
This has always been an area where the integrity of the stream bed was in question during flash flooding.  This trail has become part of the delta and water has destroyed the trail.  It has been a hard winter!

Bridges 1, 2 & 3

Bridge 1, Covered Bridge
This is a shot from 9-10-2009.  It has deteriorated since that date.  A siding board on the rail is missing.

Bridge 2
This shot is from 10-17-2013.  Since that time, the bridge has caught trash and been pushed downstream about a foot at the near end.  I can barely if at all negotiate the bridge in its current position.

Bridge 3

The location of this bridge on the stream and the widening which has occurred to the stream bed have been a problem over the years.  This shot is from 11-30-2011.

This version of bridge 3 is relatively new (3 years).  The bed became so wide that we had no poles long enough to span it requiring a splice and supports in the center.  It has since been ravaged by flash flooding and the upstream support has been washed away.  The bridge is currently sagging on the upstream side.  I can still pass over this bridge.

Bridges 9 & 10

Bridge 9
I can't negotiate those steps with my cart.

Bridge 10
I just realized that this is a bridge, also.  I gave it my designation of # 10.

Gorman Bridge 6

Bridge 6
This bridge has been in trouble for a long time.  It has been temporarily replaced.  As you can see, it has trash caught on the front side which will eventually push it away during a heavy rain.

I noticed the construction materials covered with plastic.  I assume the constructors are doing some of their work on the other bridges from this location.

Gorman Bridge 8

Bridge 8
Jason Larson showed us this new bridge on a winter hike looking for signs of wildlife.  I think that he said it would have hand rails installed before it is finished.  I could not notice any changes in it since I saw it in the winter.

Bridge 8
I really like the ramps.  It makes my travel with my cart much easier.

Driftwood Tree Roots Part II

Closeup one
Closeup two

These are closeups of the scene showing the top of the "S".  "Closeup Two" is my preferred interpretation.

Driftwood Tree Roots
As you can see in this shot, the top of the "S" has not been cloned and does not show up well.

Also in this image, you will notice the audio recorder.  The water was making nice sounds.  The link is at the bottom and is titled "br=3_sf=-2_na_vk2145_140316_00".

Driftwood Tree Roots
Finally, I used a flash, as you can see, to lighten the subject.  I used a Sigma, 10 - 20mm lens on about 14 mm.  I shot at f/16 and used "live view" for focusing.

I dodged the subject to enhance the light from the flash.  I used a -1 exposure compensation and a +3 flash exposure compensation.

Driftwood Tree Roots

Driftwood Tree Roots
I found this piece of driftwood the other day.  I was excited because I really like gnarled wood.  I made this image but did not like the background.  I decided to go back the next day to see if anything could be done about it.

Driftwood Tree Roots
I walked around it looking for a background and this is what I saw.  I thought that the stream formed an "S", a strong compositional element and my excitement rose.

The top part of the stream, upper right, was not reflecting the sky like it had the previous day.  This shot has been optimized, but tomorrow I will show it before optimization.  I liked the background but I wanted my subject, the driftwood, to stand out.

Driftwood Tree Roots
I achieved my improvements using just the sort of thing Ansel Adams would have used.  I will show you tomorrow how I did it.
