Hoodman and Sandisk

Part for Hoodcrane
Hoodman has a 3" loupe which aids in using "live view" for focusing.  I also use it for video and I have been doing video lately.  The hoodcrane allows me to mount it on my camera via the hot shoe.  I inadvertently broke this piece during storage.  I went to the Hoodman web site to look for parts but could find none.  As a last resort, I sent them email stating my need.  The very nice Sales Administrator, Vanessa Diggs, asked for a picture of the part I needed and I sent her this one.  She emailed back saying she would send me one.  Thanks Hoodman and Vanessa.

While on this type of thing, I use SanDisk CF cards in my camera.  I have two 16 GB ones, one Extreme and the other Extreme Pro.  I learned that these cards have a lifetime warranty and I recently invoked it on my Extreme Pro.  I had to ship them my non functional one and they sent me a new one.  It sort of eases the thought of spending $75 for a card when you think how long a lifetime is.

The Point is Important

Eastern Goldfinch
I have been seeing this kind of bird for several weeks this spring.  They are growing their summer plumage.  They usually stay around here during winter.  I don't know if they did this year with the bad weather.  Does anyone know?

Eastern Goldfinch
I have been aware for some time that the eye is the most important part of the animal to have in focus.  Knowing that, I was a bit unsure of the rules for the tip of the beak.  I have since decided that the tip must be in view.  The beaks in these shots are all too close for my comfort.

Eastern Goldfinch
I decided about it back when Carol and I used the watch "Monk", the OC detective, on TV.  Remember how he would walk down the street touching car antennas, parking meters, etc.?  I, one day, decided he was right about the tips of things.

Eastern Goldfinch
For me, I not only need to see the eye sharp but the tip of the beak, when possible and the tip of the tail, too.

Canada Goose Launch

Canada Geese
I found a pair on the pond the other morning.  I think that I can get to the south side of the pond, the place from where the light works best, by walking around the east end without scaring them.

Canada Goose
I can usually tell when they are going to fly because they make more noise.  I call it "revving their engines".

Canada Goose
I wish it had been flying into the sun but the wind was wrong.

Canada Goose
There used to be sand bar willow and other plants growing along the pond.  They are fewer now than before the controlled burn making it easier for me to do this.

Canada Goose
I was just thinking that they are the "bombers" of my bird world.

Stream Bed Series Addition

Stream Bed 2160_9595
I have found another sandy bottom with waves.  It is located just above bridge 1.  I happened to notice it the day before I made this capture.  The sun shines on this wavy bottom at an undisclosed time each morning.

Stream Bed 2160_9596
I am using a circular polarizing filter to control the reflections on the surface of the water.  I have found that I can adjust the strength of the reflections by turning the filter.  I like a little reflection showing but not too much.

Stream Bed 2160_9598
I think that the sunlight on the waves is important to the success of this image.

Bridge 3 Repair Needed

Bridge 3
I might have mentioned, previously, that bridge 3 needs repair.  It was our newest bridge until bridges 4 and 8 were built.  There was a piece of railroad tie supporting this side just like there is one on the other side.

Bridge 3 Support
I think that I found the missing support.  It is located just above bridge 2.  It might be worth the effort to save a newish bridge from destruction during flash flooding this spring by replacing the support.

Log In Stream
Our current policy seems to be that we cut up fallen trees into logs to float down stream.  It seems to me that they might be destructive to bridges as they travel into them during flash flooding.

Log In Stream
These logs are large enough to have striking power to create damage during flash flooding.

GNC Bridge 2

Bridge 2 Parts
These are apparently the parts to be used in repair of bridge 2.  Good to see.

Stream Bed Bridge 2
Also at bridge 2, the location of stream bed photography, I can show you the function of the circular polarizing filter.  This is the without shot.

Stream Bed Bridge 2
You can see how circular polarizing filter penetrates the surface reflections to show the bottom.

GNC Trail Maintenance Update

Trail
Monday morning April 7 dawned with new trail maintenance from the weekend.  Seeing this work, I felt more thankful to the gator.

Copse of Trees Trail
It actually made the trails better.

Trail
It must be able to tailgate its load.  Pretty impressive.

Trail
The trails will be much nicer for Mohican Wildlife Weekend, coming April 25 - 27, with this work done.
