Slide Show available from my web site

Gorman Nature Center, The Best
This slide show is now hosted at my web site so there is no limit on its availability.  It is about 30 minutes long and has sound recordings associated with some of the slides.  The musical accompaniment is provided due to Craig Duncan's kind generosity.  I hope that you can take time to watch this.

Also available is the Machines Slide Show.  I want to add to this one.

Ohio Bird Sanctuary Visit

Red-tailed Hawk

Barred Owl (also called Hoot Owl)

American Crow
These are birds in captivity.  They, for the most part, are in rehab or are unable to live in the wild.  The Bard Owl is the best in terms of not showing the cage.  I used a long lens and needed to be closer to the cage in the other cases.  I also think that I could improve them by using a tripod instead of a mono-pod.

I also created some video clips and put them together into a shot series.  You can view it at my website (see below)  I really needed to use the tripod as you will see.

Skunk Cabbage, a harbinger of spring!

Skunk Cabbage

Skunk Cabbage
I have been meaning to capture images of this plant at this stage of the season.  I am not aware of any that bloom earlier.  The bloom is down inside.  It is like Jack-in-the Pulpit in that regard.  Somehow, the plant generates enough heat to melt the snow above it.  The snow was only a couple days old when I was there so it had not melted much of it.

Snow again?!!!

This video is a combination of my playing around and humor.  Carol laughed when she saw it.  We can be thankful that it is short.  I am learning to make and edit video.

I was unhappy to hear that we were going to get a lot of snow last night.  It was kind of beautiful coming down before dark.  That video was, I think, somewhat beautiful.  This morning, sadly, we had a lot of snow and I had to do something about it.  I am thankful to have a snow thrower.  My back does not allow shoveling.

I did not want to deal with music rights so I put in a song that I sang.  I am not much of a singer.  I always wished that I could be, but.......

Spring is less than a month away, now.  I simple love the transition.  I love seeing the birds returning and much later the insects.

Winter and Flying Wildlife

Visitor's Center at Gorman

Canada Goose Takeoff

Even though we had a thaw, winter still has a grip at Gorman.  The pond has water on the surface of the ice below.  The geese walk around on this.  I wonder how they keep feeling in their feet.  The trails have been compacted through the winter by the walking traffic on them.  Consequently, they don't melt as fast.  They are icy and require much care in walking.  In some places, the snow is still so deep that I can't pull my cart through it comfortably.  My walks are limited in length.  It is good to be back viewing the wildlife after a winter hiatus.  I remember all the sound from the birds and insects during the warmer months and long for their return.  I want to enjoy the transition as completely as I can.

I intended to mention that I used to build model radio controlled airplanes.  Their wing span was about that of a Canada goose.  I learned a little about flying, though not enough to solo.  I think that knowledge helps me appreciated what those animals can do as they takeoff, fly and land.  That knowledge makes me a better photographer because I can anticipate their movements.  Their flight is governed by the same laws of aerodynamics as my airplanes used to be. I am still amazed by flight!

New Marketing Strategy beginning this Spring!

Song Sparrow

Cardinal

These are two birds I shot at Gorman recently.  It is still winter, but I can start to hear birds' mating calls, a portent of spring.

I am following a new marketing strategy related to the social media for my images.  As part of the strategy, I had to change cameras and get a smart phone.  I am using a Canon 7D now and love it.  The reviews that I read said it was better than the 50D had used previously.  I think that it is dramatically better!  I particularly like the lower noise at higher ISO's.  I am also excited about making videos of wildlife and maybe even people talking about decorating their houses.  If you follow my work, you may notice a slightly different direction.
