Mallard Duck

Mallard Duck Male
These ducks flew in after I arrived.  There were also geese present.  The mallards were in a pair.  The female was reclusive and stayed near the bank.

Last Thin Ice!

Thin Ice: Broad Strokes
This is, hopefully, the last iteration of Thin Ice for this past winter season.  I call it "Broad Strokes" because it looks like someone with a large paint brush painted the ice onto the pond.

Spring Mating

Male Cardinal
The male cardinals are singing their mating songs these days.  I love hearing them.  This one was singing "that song" when I photographed it.

The spring is a great time to photograph birds because the leaves are yet to emerge.  This is a special time of year to me.  It seems to me that the birds are so intent on mating that they are less aware of me and my camera.

The ideal shot of a cardinal, in my opinion, includes the bird having the crest raised.  I think that I would like to be more on level with the bird if I could.  That is not usually possible.

Pond Algae

Pond Algae
I have been noticing algae on the ponds this year.  I could see it even when the water was frozen.  The cold weather did not seem to hamper its growth.

Pond Algae
I read on Wikipedia that the word "algae" is Latin for seaweed.  They range from single cell organisms to multi-cell organisms such as giant kelp which grows to 65 meters in length.  They lack various structures such as roots which other plants posses.  Most algae produce oxygen by photosynthesis.

I am unsure whether the algae on the ponds is new or just new to my observation.  I have talked to pond owners in the past who have applied copper sulfate to their ponds to cause the algae to die.  I did not read on Wikipedia that it is a nuisance needing irradiation.  It mentioned many benefits derived.  I will observe to see what happens this season.

Migrating Birds

Wood Duck Male
This is the time of year the ducks are migrating to their summer breeding grounds.  I find it exciting to discover them on the pond in the morning when I arrive.  This duck is on the "Frog Pond".  I like to try to arrive before the runners and exercise enthusiasts because they scare them off

Wood Duck Pair
I did not see any except this pair that morning.  I was trying to move into a close range for a shot.  They flew and I don't know why.  When they did there were two pair.

Wood Ducks, Two Pair
They flew off and out of sight.  A few moments later, as I walked back to my cart, two more ducks launched.  I could not pick up my camera fast enough to shoot them.  I do not know what kind they were.
