Bug Erratum

Pale Ormenoides Venusta
I currently have time to clean up things from my busy shooting schedule earlier in the year.  Jan Ferrall has suggested But Guide.com for spiders several times and I decided to try it on this one.  I looked through pictures of moths, of which I thought this one.  I could not find anything.  I did see an insect image similar to this requesting and ID.  I decided to post it as an ID request.  I received information from Kyle, an 18 year old wildlife enthusiast from North Carolina.  He suggested a pale Ormenoides Venusta, a plant hopper. I looked through the images in Bug Guide of it and have decided that it is, in fact, the Ormenoides Venusta as Kyle suggested.  Thanks, Kyle

Image Rescue

Gorman Nature Center
I was so excited over this shooting opportunity in March of 2012.  The dense fog does not happen often.  I was less excited and even disappointed when I viewed the images on my computer.  There was nothing happening in the left side.  I even tried adding a catkin.

Gorman Nature Center
It did not seem to make the difference for which I was looking.  At the time I decided to just crop it square.  It kind of died a slow death.

Recently, I decided to make a print.  I can't remember why.  The print elicited the same response in me and I decided to rework it from scratch after looking at the print for some time.  Save those raw files!

Gorman Nature Center
I looked at the new interpretation for several days and have decided that I like it.  I wanted more definition in the left side.  I got it by using "clarify" in Adobe Camera Raw.  I also enhanced the left side by adding contrast in "curves."  The print became a pleasing image to me.  The pleasing color combination of yellow and light blue attracted my attention from across the room whether it was upside down or right side up.  It provided enough detail in the left to interest my eye's forays over there and back to the light.

Erratum: Chocolate Brown Fishing Spider

Wolf Spider

The above spider was erroneously named Chocolate Brown Fishing Spider in a previous blog.  My friend, Jan Ferrell, "The Spider Lady" at the nature center thinks it is a Wolf Spider.  She cited Bug Guild . Net images.  I have finally had time to look at them and agree that it is probably a Wolf Spider.  Sorry for any confusion.

Mounting Block Attachment

Mounting Block Located
Once I have marked locations, I can remove the parts and paint the mounting block.  As mentioned in an earlier blog, I use Glidden 2in1- paint and primer in flat black.  I mask off the underside so that no paint will run there.  PAINT ELSEWHERE not on the mat!

Treated Mounting Mat and Sandblock
I sand the area where the block will be mounted lightly with 80 grit sandpaper.  Sand lightly because the mat is treated with Print Shield and you don't want to remove it.

I am currently using Devcon Home, 5 Minute Epoxy (5 minute clear)  for the attachment.  It sets quickly and holds well.  I use as little as possible.  I mix on a piece of wax paper and spread onto the block with a wooden sucker stick.  I keep the epoxy away from the edges to prevent it showing.  Upon placement onto the mat, I move it around maybe just 1/8 inch.  This makes sure I have a good bond.  I don't weight it while it sets.  I used to and it made a depression that I could see on the print.

I attach the pull down retainer with Elmer's Glue.  I weight it only lightly and evenly while it dries for the same reason.

Test Print

Test Print
I hung one of my mistakes in the garage as a test print.  It is the one with the larger mounting block and treated back.

It is hung near the garage overhead door opening.  When I pull out and in, the outside air comes in.  My truck engine is hot when I come home and the snow melts off the truck onto the floor where it evaporates.  I feel those are conditions that would test the viability of this method of print display.

Test Print
As you will notice above, It seems to be withstanding the difficult conditions.  It gives me confidence that my prints will fare well at MAC.
