Art of the Brick III

Incomplete Display
I nearly did not notice that some of the pedestals were empty at the time.  I was so taken by the effect of the clouds.  I liked the bucket, also.  Could it have been part of the minimalist genre?

Mask
I saw this one in a different configuration on the website.

Skulls
I especially appreciated the display location of these skulls.  The white one near the window made exposure easier.

Art of the Brick II

Untitled Man Holding Pole
Nathan showed images of this sculpture in several different contexts.  It was on the street holding a parking meter pole, a bicycle wheel, and a small tree.

Untitled Female Torso
Recognized universally as a thing of beauty, the female torso was also a subject Nathan embraced.

Try it Yourself!

Untitled Flipflops
I had the thought that I could possibly make these by just looking at them.  I was thinking of Caleb, my grandson, who is pretty good with the bricks.

Untitled Towel
This one might be a little harder but, again, I think that Caleb could do it.

Happy 2014

The Art Inside
Zinn, Jon Kabet: The only time you ever have in which to learn anything or see anything or feel anything, or express any feeling or emotion, or respond to an event, or grow, or heal, is this moment, because this is the only moment any of us ever gets. You’re only here now; you’re only alive in this moment.

As I thought about 2014, I was reminded of the above quote which I had just read.  It somehow seems to go with the image above.  Each moment we are given is a moment to get the art out.  I suppose that translates into live in the moment.  To do more of that in 2014 and see what I can create.

Nathan Sawaya seems to be aware of this issue as he creates several of his sculptures.

Untitled Man In Box
It seems we are needing to push the trivia of the world around us back so that we can express ourselves.

Happy New Year 2014!  My you express yourself moment by moment as time proceeds.

New Year's Party Dress?

On The Run
The picture on the wall in the background depicts what appears to be an actual girl wearing this sculpture.  She is running under the theater marquee.  It is open on the inside and I think that maybe the right sized girl could fit inside.

Umbrella
Nathan does glue his works together according to the video.  A picture on the wall depicts a man standing in the rain under this umbrella.  I suppose that since is is glued it would shed water.

I almost wish I could go back alone and sit and think about these things more in depth.

Art of the Brick I

Untitled Dog
Nathan Sawaya tells a story about growing up in an apartment in New York City.  He asked his parents for a dog and their answer was, "No."  He decided to make himself a dog out of legos and he did.  It was kept behind the couch.  I don't know if this dog was the one or not.  Obviously, he can make a dog.

Gray
Maybe this creation was meant to depict himself as an emerging artist.  Maybe not.  It is non-the-less impressive.

Art of the Brick

Lucas, Loudon and Yellow
After Decker's we went to the Mansfield Art Center to view the Art of the Brick.  It is by Nathan Sawaya.

Pushing Against and Chad
His works are, many of them, life sized or larger.

Sawaya Self-portrait and Odell
I way unaware of the subject of this "sculpture" until after I saw the video where he narrates about his creations.  He, to best of my knowledge, did not mention this work.  I knew from his accurate likeness who it was after seeing the video.

This show closes today.  If you have not seen it, do.  The admission is worth it in my opinion.  It is $10/ for adults and $5/ for children.
