A Birthday Party

The above shot was made with a Sigma 17-35mm lens and was not part of the following experiment.

I had read about a portrait lens recently.  It was 85mm and f/1.4.  I don't own such a lens.  I was intrigued by the concept of shooting with a shallow depth of field after reading about the lens.  I do have a Sigma 105mm, f/2.8 lens.  It is two stops slower but I wanted to try to see what it would do to the background.  I shot at f/2.8.  I used an ISO which would allow a shutter speed fast enough to hand hold the camera.  I would use a tripod for a serious portrait but I wanted to see how the background would come out.  I am sure that the lens I read about would make even a "less in focus" background.  

I must say that I was surprised by the focus contrast between the subject and the background.  I achieved sharp focus on the faces using auto focus.  The thing that surprised me was that the DOF, depth-of-field, was deep enough for the face.  I use more DOF when I shoot in field.  I liked the bokeh, blur  in the background, of this kind of shot.

I seldom get out at the magic hour of light in the mornings but I did on this day.  I really liked the "star" of the plant head.  A shot like this is frequently cluttered in the backgound.  I tried to reduce the cluttering by placing a cloth, in this case, a mid-toned one.  It was in shadow which helped.

In this one, I used a black cloth as you can see.  I cloned out one stem and created an image with less distractions.  

Both of these images were created with Helicon Focus software.  It has been several weeks since I created this and I still like it.

Midland Painted Turtle

Midland Painted Turtle

I was just checking Facebook and saw the Springmill Learning Center's post about the Painted Turtle.  It reminded me that I have not shown my shots of them from this spring.  Part of the reason is that I have had my computer up on blocks for that last week or two.  Much repair was needed.  I am just starting to emerge from that difficult time.

 This shot reminds me how I felt when I called the nature center to report a turtle sitting along the path around the pond.  I was afraid that it was hurt when in fact it was laying eggs.  I knew about sea turtles going inland to lay their eggs but I had not thought about our painted turtles do that also.
