Yield from 50-500mm Lens

Bird Setup, Sigma 50-500mm
I found that I needed a 2X converter mounted with the lens because of the extreme distances.

Red-shouldered Hawk
At the time, I thought this was the mature hawk.  I had the camera tripod positioned so that I could "hide" behind the tree trunk to its left.  The bird still knew I was there.  She was pretty concerned about the safety of the young in the nest.

Red-shouldered Hawk in the Nest
This could have been the adult.  It was shot early in the season so I supposed at the time it was unfledged young.  I might have thought the young were calling for food.

The Beginning

Wild Bird Photography
I received this book from a friend at Christmas 2000.  It looked quite interesting and I sat down to read it during the holiday break.

When finished, I decided that I wanted to do "that."  Mr. Fitzharris recommended a 500mm lens for the activity.  I was soon on my way to the camera store to get one.  It turned out that I could not afford a 500mm lens so I bought a Sigma 50-500mm instead.  I just kept looking forward.

That was the beginning.  My obsessive personality did the rest.

Bald Eagle

Bald Eagle
These came from Lexington, Ohio near my home.  I met a photographer that day from around Cincinnati who came to photograph the eagles when he came to the Mid-Ohio Race Course.  We listened to the race cars while we worked.

Bald Eagle

There were a pair and they had a nest.  They would take turns flying out over the lake to collect food for the hatchlings.

Bald Eagle Nest

The nest was about five feet across and weighed quite a lot.  They came back to the nest each season.  Soon after my visit, we had lots of rain, the nest filled and fell.  We were unable to view the nest afterwards so that the eagles could be comfortable in the new nest to which they were moved.  I think ODNR was involved in the move.

Red-bellied Woodpecker

Red-bellied Woodpecker

I heard this bird while walking the forest trail quite often.  I looked and looked and finally saw it here.  They nest in tree cavity.

Movie Setup
It turns out that the best view was from the lower trail.

Movie Setup

I made this from the trail using the 50-500mm lens.

wulfenite_mafimi_durango_mexico
This is yield from the B&L Objective.

B&L Objective
Please notice the word "Plan" inscribed on the case of the objective.  You may remember that indicates the objective can project a flat image onto the sensor.  You may notice the subject stays sharp to the edges of the image at the top.

Later, we will talk about some of the other things inscribed on the side of the objective like "160."
