Flowering Dogwood |
The Flowering Dogwood are glorious in our area this year. The blooms are the little yellow things in the center. We might think of the white things as petals but according to the understanding I have been given they are called bracts. I have been trying to photograph them this year but it has been too windy.

I did not particularly like this shot. It did not portray what I had hoped to show.

I liked this one better. You can see the parts of the flowers and the pollen if you look closely.

Flowering Dogwood Camera Settup |
I brought a sample inside for the above shots. I put it into a cup of water. The technique used was inspired by an article I read in Outdoor Photographer Magazine. The flash in the back is set on "manual" at 1/2 power. The flash to the left of the camera is set on ETTL at FEC, flash exposure compensation, at -.5.

Flowering Dogwood Bloom and Insects |
I decided to shoot another series with minor changes. I, inadvertently, removed the stem from the water during the setup. The blooms started to wilt and the insects came out. I remember I had absently wondered what insect pollinated these blooms and, magically, they appeared. I have submitted an ID request to Bugguide.com and am awaiting their reply. I will let you know when I do. I thing the insects are at the larval stage.
