Insects of Summer Retrospective II

Nymph Katydid
Some of these creatures have long antenae.

Wasp
I think this is a female.  I read while trying to identify it that the females sometimes drink nectar.

Spur-throated grasshopper
I am finding that the new, different, creatures are not as plenteous as when I first started this quest.  I don't have a problem with making better or at least more images of the same ones.

Mydas Fly
I was extremely exited the first time I photographed one of these.  I still like doing it and remembering that my technique with the equipment has improved since the beginning.

Insects of Summer Retrospective I

Honey Bee
I love the feel of the yellow!  I don't know if I shot this for the flower or the bee.  I can tell you that my attention was on the bee's eyes as I worked the scene.

Honey Bee
This little guy stayed all night.  Dew covered its wings and body as you can see.  Just look at that yellow!  We won't see that for a while.

Bumble Bee
This bee is on golden rod.  Those yellow flowers excite it too!

Meadow Grasshopper
I don't think that they have strong directional control when they fly.  They jump as far as they can and flutter their wings.  The wings prolong their time being airborne but there is a limit to the distance they travel.

Last of the Aerial Shoot

Airport Subway Restaurant
I kind of know the person who has this restaurant.  Her grandson dated Lexy.

I have been trying to make an image to please her.  She seemed interested in having the compass rose in the image.  I am waiting to hear from her.

A private pilot can fly into Mansfield Lahm and park in front of the restaurant.  I know pilots who will fly a hundred miles or so just to take their wife to dinner.  That is an option with the Airport Subway.

I used the Sigma 105 mm lens on this and the next.

179th Air National Guard, C27j Planes
Did I mention that I love aircraft?  I do!  I see when I am photographing.  It is my way of looking at the aircraft.  I know that there are way too many aircraft for me to photograph in this life!  My start is too late.

Our House
This is the best light I had on the shoot.  I don't know if it is the best light I could have had because of my lack of experience.  I think that Frank came around a second time and was lower and closer.

This is not my choice of the best of the shoot of your house.  I used a Sigma 105 mm, f/2.8 lens at 1/1000 and f/2.8.  The lens has "Optical Stabilization" and I really liked it for this application.  I think that this one shoot convinced me of the need for OS.  I had not found it particularly helpful previously.

Chad's House
The Trees had just changed on that day.  We had ideal leaf color, in my opinion.  This is the back view of their house.  We came around and I had better shots of the front.  I think that I would like to try a little longer lens with OS in these situations.  I also want to talk to Frank about whether He could fly lower and closer.  I had to wear a headset with a ,by the lips, mic.  I was supposed to rotate the mic up when shooting because of the wind noise.  I am afraid that I totally failed at operating that.  Poor Frank had to listen to wind noise while I was shooting.

I had planned to shoot Tiffany's house but I directed Frank down the wrong street.  I shot another house similar to hers and did not become aware until I was processing the image.

Gorman Nature Center
It was difficult for me to recognize Gorman from the Air.  I think that cloud bank mentioned earlier was the culprit.  The tall grasses looked like bare earth.

Gorman Nature Center
I would appreciate any feedback you can provide.  I should mention that I used a Sigma 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens for these two shots.  The mode wheel on my camera had been bumped and the shutter speed ended up being 1/180 for these shots.  I must learn to check the settings each time!!!!!!!!!

Clearfork Reservoir
I thought of my friend Chuck Hagan when I made this capture.  His house is probably down there somewhere.  There is a slider in Adobe Camera Raw named "Clarity."  It was very helpful as I processed these shots.

Cessna 150h
This is the kind of light I envisioned before the shoot.  It happened just as Frank shut off the engine.  Hopefully I have learned from my mistakes.

Aerial Photography

Frank and Larry
I went flying the other day.  It was my first experience in a light plane.  Frank Ujvari owner of U-vary Air was the pilot.  Frank is a great pilot, having been an F-18 pilot.  I am sorry that I did not get to discuss his past experiences with him.  I was pretty focused on what I was doing.  He did tell me he flew off aircraft carriers but I did not think to ask which one or ones.

Gorman Nature Center
I may have mentioned previously that I am doing a new slide show titled, "The Colors of Gorman."  My primary reason for flying was to get some aerial shots for the slide show.  I had contacted David Fitzsimmons about the shoot beforehand to get suggestions.  He said to use a prime lens if I had one.  I think that might be because it would be less prone to flare.  He said to make sure it was a clear day.  He also told me to shoot at 1/1000 sec.  I think that he also told me not to let the camera touch the plane and of course don't use a tripod.
I also read about aerial photography in Galen Rowell's book, Outdoor Photography.  He pretty much reinforced the ideas I already had.

We waited about a week looking at long range forecasts.  Finally, the day arrived or so we thought.  I looked at the weather before leaving for the airport.  They said we would have a clear day.  The weather we had experienced was moving East and was over Pittsburgh.  At the airport, the Eastern sky began to become brighter and I could see that weather front moving off to the East.  There was a low bank of clouds in the East.  I tried to wait, but I think now that we went too soon.

More tomorrow.

Another Soccer Playing Family

Megan, Chad, Loudon and Lucas
Everybody plays soccer except Megan.  I recently attended one of the games.  They played the early game that day.  I had to shoot from the opposite side of the field from them because of the sun.

Lucas and Loudon
They both played a great game but Lucas surpassed all the previous games for him that I have seen.
