Grain Handling

Corner Auger Grain Cart
Keith can keep his combine running while he empties the grain into this cart.

Freightliner Grain Transport
The cart empties into this unit in the field.  It transports the grain to the bin or market.

Great-spangled Fritillary

Great-spangled Fritillay
I saw this lovely butterfly on the trail running parallel to and South of the stream. I think that it was enjoying the warm sun and I know that I did as I sat down to capture its image.

Its host plant, i.e. the plant the caterpillar eats, is the Common Blue Violet.  I had not been unaware of this fact until just now as I write.  It is probably too late in the season to look but I will look in the spring.

Common Blue Violet

Isn't it interesting how things work together?

Combine Repairs

Repair Detail
The header had a part break and I am sure Keith called for the part while still in the field.  They sent the wrong part and the equipment was inoperable for a time.  Keith and his assistants "cobbled" the part to get the machine running.

While the machinery was inoperable, I photographed details.

Drive Wheels Are Large
I had some fun incorporating different techniques as I photo graphed them.

Monarch Butterfly

Monarch Butterfly Female
I was at one of my sitting spots the other day, enjoying the warm sunshine and resting from the hill climb when this Monarch landed on the goldenrod just across from me.  My bird camera was within reach and I made this shot with it.  I was hoping that it would focus that close and it did.

I had just heard on the news that morning that the Monarchs were migrating out of Canada and had stopped off at a park in Cleveland to rest.  People were reportedly flocking to see them.  The commentator said that they travel about 10 miles per day.  This one was probably in the vanguard about six days ahead.

I was pleased that I had this sighting and that I could record it.

Combine Parts

Case-IH Combine
This the combine without the header.

Case-IH 30 Foot Header
I was born just as the thrashing era was ending.  They began to build the thrashing process into something called a "combine."  The farmer could leave the straw in the field and carry the grain with him.  My father's first combine, an Allis Chalmers had a five foot header, quite a step down from Keith's.

Richland County Fair 2015

Larry with Grain Hopper
Marty Breitinger, my brother-in-law, and I visited the Richland County Fair the other day.  I was amazed at the size of this grain hopper.  Marty used my phone to take my picture with it.  I thought that he did a nice job of composition.

We looked at the animals, but not all.  We saw two goats which were smaller than I expected.  We looked at horses.  We saw them showing hogs.  We viewed the antique farm equipment.  We had lunch.  Thanks Marty.

Keith tells me his hopper is the same size as the one above.  Since I am planning to video his harvest, I will be interested in seeing it.  I am planning how to do the audio as it must be captured separately.

Soybean Harvest at the Kisling Farm

Case-IH 7088 Axial Flow Combine
Keith uses the above pictured combine to harvest his soybeans.  I have created a sound (make sure you un-mute the sound) video of the operation.  The video includes day and night operation, fixing the sickle bar, and unloading.  I hope you look and enjoy.
