Foggy Frog Pond

Frog Pond
Fog gives us, photographers, the opportunity to display aerial perspective.  It really adds interest to an image.  This is an HDR capture.  I usually use -4, -2, 0, +2, +4 exposure compensation for a five frame capture.  This is the first of at least three such captures. I unintentionally had spot metering set and got an over exposed series.  In an effort to salvage the group, I loaded all five into ACR, Adobe Camera Raw, selected all five and adjusted exposure so that I did not loose detail in the sun for the -4 shot.  This involved, as I remember, a one to two stop decrease in exposure of all five.  When I processed them in Photomatix, the color came out garish.  Rather than discard the group, I decided to try the B&W conversion.  I used one of the presets in PhotoMatix to obtain this shot which I like a lot.

Frog Pond
This is the second group of five that I shot.  The aerial perspective is still there but not as strongly evident to my eye.  It is still a good shot, I think.

Frog Pond
This is the last group shot.  Remember the sun is still rising.  The clouds are moving and the fog is burning off.  I think this is my second best series.  The aerial layers seem more evident to me.  I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I recently described these shots as "killer landscapes" to my daughter-in-law, Megan who is one of my strongest supporters.  She has her house filled with my photography.  I hope she sees these.

Spider Webs and Sunrise Cacophony

Spider Web and Reflection
I shot this one while sitting a the vernal pool.  We had rains just prior to this and the water level was up.  I thought the sun's light playing on the dew made it interesting.

Spider Web
This shot was made at or about sunrise.  I watched the sunlight move across the web.  I had been looking for a place to stop and photograph at the time of sunrise and this was it.

Incidentally, have you noticed how the birds seem to greet the sunrise with very active singing and flying.  I have noticed that it occurs as the sun hits the tree in which they are perched.  Of course, the sun hits different parts of the meadow edges at different times.  The birds in the trees on the hill do this before the ones down in the bottom by the stream.  I made a recording the other day down by the stream.  I call it "Sunrise Cacophony."   It is 52" long and is available to hear at Sunrise Cacophony .  It is at the top.

Spiders and Spider Webs

Trapped Insect
Halloween is coming!  The spiders are making webs.

Spider Unknown
This spider had so much dew on its dorsal side that I could not identify it.

Spider Unknown
Spider Experts, come to my rescue.  What is this spider?  It was not a large spider but not as small as a large jumping spider.

Wandering Glider

Wandering Glider
This is a medium sized dragonfly.  It is very common at Gorman Nature Center.  I have seen it a lot at "my" vernal pool.

I am, however; unsure about its ID.  It seems to me that the Wandering Glider should be larger as I read about it.  I have gone through multiple books several times and this is all I get.

Wandering Glider
I would appreciate comments from anyone with a better idea on its ID>

Frog

Female American Bullfrog
I sometimes photograph frogs while I sit at the vernal pool waiting on insects to appear.  I know they will come soon because the frogs are waiting on them too.

Female American Bullfrog
This frog maybe did not feel the insect that landed on its back.  Since I was set up to shoot insects I photograph it.

GNC Pond

GNC Pond
We get interesting fog and haze at this time of year, especially at sunrise.  I find myself shooting HDR when the sun is included in the frame.  The breezes are usually nil which helps keep foreground elements from moving.

GNC Pond
I had no problem with the foreground element moving in this image but it blocks my view of the bench.  I did not realize at the time that I would want to see that bench without my view being blocked by the grass.  It is too bad, because it would have made a pleasing image.  It has lots going for it.

Vernal Pool

Vernal Pool
This shot was unplanned, i. e., I did not dream it.  I shot it immediately before I shot the one I showed yesterday.  I had a hard time deciding which I liked better.  I think the fact that I dreamed it was the deciding factor for the one from yesterday.

This, also, is an HDR sequence.  There is no substitute for morning, sunrise light!
