Bladderwort

Bladderword
This plant is much more common in the pond at Gorman than it was several years ago.  Its bloom reminds me a little of a snap dragon.  I had occasion to get a close view of it last summer while photographing insects.  I was able to capture this image using my insect setup with flash.

This one survived the cuts because it is an interesting plant.  It floats on bladders.  It has no roots to the bottom like the lily-pad.  It gets its food by eating pond life.  That's right, it is carnivorous.

This is the underwater part lying on a lily-pad leaf.

Canadian Goose Family

Canada Geese Goslings

There is order in the world.  These parents are caring for their young.  It seems to me that people talk about seeing the young of a species even if it is the goose.  This image survived the cuts for that reason.

I don't know where the nest was located.  It might have been at the adjacent pond on private property.  When the small fry can walk they can come through the fence and swim in the Gorman pond.  I think they only come out when there is the least likelihood of their being disturbed since the young can't yet fly to safety.

Humorous Birds

Tree Swallows

This image survived the cuts solely because of perceived humor on my part.  It involves anthropomorphism by me.  My sense of humor is exceedingly dry, I am told.  What makes me laugh might not affect you at all.

It appears to me that they build their nests in pairs.

Slaty Skimmer Dragonfly

Slaty Skimmer Teneral Male
This shot survived the cuts and is printed.  It would probably interest you only if you study dragonflies.  The Slaty Skimmer Dragonfly is one I have photographed since 2009.  It turns out that it was not officially recorded in this county until this past summer.

The dragonfly in the picture is in the process of forming its new exoskelton.  It has just emerged from its old exoskelton, the dark object just under it.  Once it forms its new exoskelton it will fly away to begin its short flying life.  The term, "teneral" refers to this time.

I would not have known what it was if not for Judy Semroc and Larry Roche and their book which contains a picture of one.  They change in appearance when they begin to fly.  I have a good shot of an adult which made the cuts.

They were very common around the pond this past summer.

Goldenrod galls

Jason Larson
Jason took us on a walk looking for animal signs in winter.

Jason Larson
The first thing we looked at was galls on goldenrod stems.  He showed us three kinds.

Gall Fly Gall
Tip Gall
Mid-stem Gall

I did not catch the exact names of the mid-stem and tip gall even though he told us.  The picture on the far left is depicting the Canadian Gall Fly Gall and it is only on the Canadian Goldenrod.  He pointed out that each gall contains the larva of the insect which laid its egg in the plant.  The larva lives in the gall through the winter and emerges in the spring or summer.

I was impressed at Jason's knowledge of nature.  His walks are very informative.  He is doing most of the programing at present and attendance is a good way to get to know him.

New Bridge

Bridge Six
I attended a winter nature walk lead by Jason Larson, Director Richland County Park District, at the end of December.  I was able to see first hand the new bridge built by a class from Mansfield City Schools.  I understand, from Jason, that the plan is to replace all such structures in the next several years.

The bridge looks to me like it is built well enough to fend off flash flooding which occurs after heavy rains.  I believe Jason said that hand rails are yet to be added.

Jason Larson
The activity was organized around a search for signs of life during the winter.  Jason carried a bucket in which to carry samples.

"A Vernal Pool" at Gorman Nature Center

Gorman Nature Center
It seems that the travail of getting this series displayed has been long and arduous.  Here it is at Gorman Nature Center.  Thanks to Jason Larson, Richland County Park District Director, for the opportunity to display it.  If you are in the area, please stop by during Nature Center hours to view it.  If you do not live in the area, you can view these 15 and a few more in a slide show on the home page of Larry's Images .com .

These prints are NOT for sale.  I am still working out technical difficulties related to production and longevity.  In most cases the creatures are identified.  I have tried to share what I learned through the experience of photographing them.

The vernal pool is the one on the right on the way to the covered bridge if you don't recognize it.  The creatures are there all the time even when it is frozen on the surface.  You may notice that the naturalists have broken the ice to net creatures.
