Lepidocrocite

Lepidocrocite #1
I've been working on this sample from Grubb Lake, West Hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA since last November.  It presented me some challenges which I have made progress on solving.  The field of view in this image is 9/64"..

The sample is maybe 3/4" long.  The real crystals reside on the nose of dragon.

Lepidocrocite # 3
When I started, I had no or little idea what was interesting about the sample.  My only clue was that it was a bit pricey.

As I worked with the sample, I must build an image in my mind of its "landscape".  The image at the top covers a fraction of the landscape in the last one.  If you look closely you can see the location of the image stack in #1 on #3.

Skunk Cabbage

Skunk Cabbage
This is one you can look for around Ground Hog Day in February.  I looked for it the other day but was not sure I saw it.

Skunk Cabbage
I don't think it smells very good.  I don't notice its smell this time of year.

Crocus

Crocus
Always a portent of spring, this plant grew on the landscaping around the front light.

Carnelian

Carnelian
We had quite a lot of rain the other day and the sump pump was running almost continuously.  My setup for doing macro photography is right next to it.  I decided that I needed to do larger subjects for that day.  I went through my samples which are about 5/8 to 3/4" and found this.  This is essentially quartz with impurities.  They are likely iron.  It is not clear so it could not be a gem.

The sample rested on my logan light box slide sorter to demonstrate its translucence.

The first (not shown) series, focus stack, I shot lacked one of the diffusers and the highlights were much too pronounced.  I wanted the finished product to demonstrate, also, the surface characteristics of the sample.  I found that the flash with both diffusers and the back light from the slide sorter best accomplished this goal. It is the one at the top.

I was pleased with the end result and enjoyed the process.
