More of Don's Carving

Mallard Duckling Carving

These carvings are of differing sizes.  The cardinal above is a pin.  The duck on the right, above, is about 6 inches long.  The others are in between.  As I looked at these to photograph them, I became aware that Don is an artist.  He inscribed all but the one made of shells with dates and his name.  I glimpsed a view of his evolution as an artist over the years.  I doubt that his sisters appreciate the work and effort that went into the creation of these works of art.  He certainly has my respect!

Again, I photograph to see.  I saw these art objects in a light not seen before as a result of my photographing them.  It was an evocative experience.

A video for the kiddies

It is called the Counting Book.  It is my first exercise in making videos.  I became interested last summer when I started using my point and shoot camera to make movies at Gorman Nature Center.  I am anxious to continue this coming season.  Who knows what exciting subjects I will record!

Red Breasted Nuthatch Sculpture

Red Breasted Nuthatch Sculpture

This sculpture was created by my brother-in-law, Don Davidson.  He lives in Ellicott City, MD.  He did it in 2003 and gave it to me as a gift.  I have treasured it ever since.  It was my introduction to nuthatches.  I have seen them at Gorman Nature Center and the Ohio Bird Sanctuary but do not have any good shots.  They exhibit the unique behavior of walking down the tree truck head first.  I read that we are in their range so I will continue to look for this one.

Don brings gifts for his sisters when he comes to Ohio.  They are usually little carvings of birds.  Maybe Carol would let me photograph some of them.

Coal

Coal
After peat comes coal on Geofacts No. 11It said, somewhere, that 10 feet of peat are compressed into 1 foot of coal.  Apparently, that is not considered the process of metamorphosis.  As I understand, metamorphosis transforms bituminous coal into anthracite coal, a harder, cleaner fuel.  We have mostly bituminous coal in Ohio.  Geofacts No. 11 states that bituminous coal is a sedimentary rock.

Mansfield was a great user of coal in the past.  I know this because I have crawled around in attics of older buildings in my younger years.  There was much coal smoke dust.  I would come out covered in it.

It took me a couple days to get this image.  This is the only piece of coal in my collection of rocks and minerals.  It came glued to card with other samples.  I removed it to photograph it.  I have tried to remove the glue but it is still visible when viewed closely.
