Spring = birth and rebirth

Canada Goose Eggs

I have been going to Gorman Nature Center for about 10 years.  I don't remember seeing little goslings before.  If we have them this year, I will be sure to share with you.

Canada Goose
I have heard that Geese can be like watch dogs.  This male, I think, was coming toward me as I looked at the above eggs.  Thankfully, he stayed in the water.  Listen to the Canada Goose.

An undercover bike ride!

Graceland Cemetery
This Graceland is not in Memphis.  It is in Sidney.  I remember a bike ride with my brother, Craig, to it.  It seems that a certain girl lived near it.  I really did not know her.  Mom and Dad had to go somewhere for the day, leaving us at the farm to carry on.  Well, we rode bicycles to Sidney to this cemetery to see the girl.  It was a nice day and I enjoyed the ride.

I don't remember our ages.  I suppose that we would have driven if we could have.  Maybe we had only one car at the time and Dad and Mom had it.  I kind of remember that our parents were not exactly happy about our excursion when they found out.

Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum, Wapakanetta

F-5D Skylancer
Neil Armstrong, former Navy pilot, flew this plane from September, 1960 to September, 1962.  The plane was used in research by NASA.  They were developing information and technology which would later be used in the space shuttle.  It was called Project Dyna-Soar.

Tail Hook
When I saw the tail-hook I wondered if Neil had been a Navy pilot.  Later research revealed that he had.  He was, however; a civilian when he worked for NASA.  Can you imagine the rush!  The Federal Government mainly gave him this plane to fly as his own for those years.

After Burner
Wikipedia says that the plane had an engine upgrade to a General Electric J79Maximum speed: 990 mph,  Service ceiling: 57,500 ft,  Rate of climb: 20,730 ft/min.  Compared to civilian planes flown today,  this was quite a ride!

Anyone that I know, did you become a pilot, military or otherwise?

Big Four Bridge in Sidney, OH

Big Four Bridge
Mother talked about this bridge to us on more than one occasion.  It opened in 1924.   She was sure to tell us that a man is buried in it.  I did not really have a concept or interest in where the railroad went.  I understand that it was originally the Bellefontaine and Indiana Railroad.  It later became the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis.  It is the railroad which was closest to our farm as we grew up.  I crossed it driving my father's tractor to the "elevator."  It went near my Uncle's farm in Logan County.  There was a big iron bridge in Quincy.  I wonder if it is still in service.  I remember visiting the Round House in Bellefontaine as a child.

The Great Miami River passes under the bridge.

Before Interstate 75, US Route 25 was the main north/south highway in that part of the state.  It passed right under the Big Four Bridge.

The bridge is a massive thing.  I was a little surprised to see it still in use.  I noticed concrete chunks in the grass under the bridge.  I think that some renovation has been going on.  Speaking of which, I think that renovation has also occurred at the Pasco bridge.  (no picture of Pasco bridge)

Sidney, Ohio visit

Shelby County Courthouse
I recently traveled to Sidney, OH for family reasons.  Some of you might remember the town.  It is the county seat of Shelby County.

The "Spot to Eat" in Sidney
I met my brother, Craig, at the Spot for lunch.  Our Mother worked right across the street from the Spot and we came to love the place because of her.  I don't remember eating there as a high school student.  There is an interpretive marker out front stating that former president George W. Bush ate there in 2004 on a campaign trip through the area.

CR Frame Shop

This building used to contain Tanger's Furniture and Appliance Store.  Jim Sarver and I worked there about the time of graduation in 1963.  It was my second job away from the farm.  I worked there some summers when I came home from college.

Lee's Chinese Restaurant

A couple doors down was the White Front Bar and Grill.  It is now Lee's Chinese Restaurant.  The White Front had what was considered by some to be the best tenderloin sandwich.  It was a treat for me to have one on occasion.

I had only a short time while waiting for my brother.  Some of the other places I saw was the Old Jail which was right on the corner as we drove into town from the East.

Old Jail at Sidney, OH
I had a friend in high school named Jerry Ginn.  I remember asking him if he had any connection to the Ginn Grain Company.  I am trying to remember his answer.  I kind of think it was either distant or none.  Anyone know?
