Other Insects II

Bumblebee
Blooming flowers are an excellent place at which to capture images of nectar loving insects.

Silver-spotted Skipper
I am using a little different lens setup lately.  I am using my Sigma 105mm, f/2.8 macro.  I mount it on a Sigma 2x Converter.  It is not fast enough to auto focus but much easier to manual focus because of the brighter view finder image.  The OS, optical stabilization, is a help also.  I set it on os1.

Northern Broken Dash
Oh, another advantage of the above setup is that I can shoot at ISO 100, making noise less of an issue.  In this shot, the aperture of f/11 made the background dark.  the shutter and aperture combination came in at 1.5 stops below ambient light.  The shutter was set at 1/250th which also helped make the background dark.

Other Insects

Deleware Skipper
I am seeing nearly no large butterflies this year.  The little ones, however; are a different story.  They seem numerous.  Look at the length of this butterfly's proboscis.  The flower is milkweed.

Bumblebee
The bumblebees like the nectar of the milkweed flower, also.

Lahm Airport Day

Lockheed C-130H Hercules
The 2013 Airport Day had an upbeat feel to it, I think, because the C-130s have returned.  Lucas and Loudon joined me at the pancake breakfast and to inspect the aircraft.

North American T-6G Texan
We saw this beautifully restored WW II trainer.  You may not touch but you may look to your heart's delight and we did.

Lucas and Loudon
I think they look more like the Hulk.  We waited in line for those paintings and were afraid the lady would quit before we got there.

Airport Day is a great activity which includes kids.  Lucas and Loudon just kept playing in the the bouncer rooms.  I sat on the picnic tables watching their shoes and them.  We all enjoyed it immensely.

North American F-100F

North American F-100F Super Sabre
This particular aircraft flew in Southeast Asia.

The F-100 entered service in 1954.  It was supersonic with a maximum speed of 875 miles per hour.  It came just after the Korean War.  It was the first USAF fighter capable of Mach 1 speeds in level flight.  It was a large step forward in speed from the F-86 Sabre, also built by North American, which served in the Korean war, and whose maximum speed was 675 miles per hour.

The F-100 became the first Wild Weasel aircraft during the War in Southeast Asia.  It flew in support of the F-105s on bombing missions.  It was much slower than the F-105s and held them back.  Eventually it was replaced by the F-105 Wild Weasel variant.

Republic F-105G Thunderchief
The F-105 made a better Wild Weasel because it did not hold back the F-105 bombers.

Spring Azure

Spring Azure
This may be the most numerous kind of butterfly I have seen this year.  It is white underneath and blue on top.  I have been waiting for a shot of the top but they are difficult to find with the wings open.  I will let you know if I get a shot like that.

Common Whitetale Female

Common Whitetail Female
Often, the female looks much different from the male.  This is a good example.

Wandering Glider

Wandering Glider
These are small, 1 1/4", dragonflies.  They come back to the same perch.  They land in cluttered backgrounds.  They seem numerous at the vernal pool South of the covered bridge.  They blend in and I don't notice them unless they fly.
