Angelaius Phoeniceus

Red-winged Blackbird Female
I found that "motor drive" on my camera was a good way to get shots like this.  I settled on using the point in the middle of the viewfinder.  All I had to do was track the head of the bird as it flew past.

Red-winged Blackbird Male
During nesting season, they become feisty and if you are willing to risk an attack you can get closeup shots.  I have had the male hit the top of my head.  I was wearing a head.  I have in flight closeups of the male but that was with a different lens.

Bird Blind

The Bird Blind
I went to an outdoor outfitters store and bought camofladge netting, plastic pipe, fittings, and gorilla glue.  I used it in my backup yard as I began using the 50-500mm lens.

I had a bird feeder there and there was much activity especially on snow days.  The capture below was on Kodak E100SW slide film in a Canon Elan 7 in November of 2002.

Male Cardinal
I sat in the blind, studied the movements of the birds, and their awareness of me.  They knw I was there but didn't care as long as I moved little, was mostly silent and I stayed in the blind.  They were used to the blind because it was there permanently.

Bluebirds

Bluebird Female with Worm
Like many of the birds at Gorman, the bluebirds are relaxed around people with Telephoto Lenses.

Bluebird Male with Insect
Both the male and female cooperate in feeding the nestlings.

More Geese

Goose and Brood
The geese sometimes pair off in the pond at Gorman.  You will notice that fewer geese are present when you arrive.  It is then just two.

Goose Pair
There is much drama to observe.

Geese and Brood
The male becomes, agressive, protecting the nest and "family."

"King of the Pond"
It all fits to the procreation effort.

Goose Landing
I have always loved aircraft and the goose is no exception.  Here is one on final!

More Yield from the 50-500mm Lens

Mallard Drake
I mounted the 50-500 in a monopod.  They told to obtain a different tripod head but did have some success with the monopod.

Canada Goose Pair
I found that I could control the camera and heavy lens well enough to catch shots like this.  They kind of run on the water until they reach liftoff speed.

Canada Goose
They usually make a lot of noise at or before takeof.  It's like they are running up the engines.

More Red-shouldered Hawks

Red-tailed Hawk
The adult or adults return to the nest to protect it.  This is three days later than the ones from the other day's posting.

Red-tailed Hawk
The location of this shot is not readily accessable to me with my cart of equipment.  It involved quite an expenditure of effort.

Red-tailed Hawk Hatchlings or Young
This shot is from two months later.  It appears to me that they are older than I initially thought.
