They Came From Space

The theme for the 2012 edition of The Richland Lithic and Lapidary Society's annual show is They Came from Space.  You can view and even hold real meteorites.  It is exciting!  The show continues today, June 10 from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM.  Admission is:  Adults $4.00, Children and Seniors $3.00.  There are hourly drawings in which you could win a prize.  There is also an hourly silent auction for rocks.  I got a small bucket last year through which I am working my way when I have time.  It was a real bargain and contained many exciting rocks.  You have probably seen some on this blog.  There are more to come.

I met Kay and Gay yesterday.  They are members of The Richland Lithic and Lapidary Society as you might be able to see from their shirts.  They have a booth at which they demonstrate polishing rocks.  They have a display of fluorescent rocks.  It has regular incandescent lighting showing the rocks and their names.

You can push a button which turns off the incandescent and turns on black light, the type used in dance clubs.

The effect is quite dramatic.  I loved the challenge of making these images.  I had to use my widest lens, Sigma 10 - 20 mm and of course my tripod.  The booth was small making composition difficult.  Kay, very graciously, offered that her husband would remove the glass for a better image.  That was very helpful because of the reflections from the space between the curtains of the booth.

I used f/16, 8 seconds at ISO 100 for the first shot and f/16, 30 seconds at ISO 500 for the second.  I had "long exposure noise reduction" set to "auto" on my Canon 7D.  I was quite pleased with the result.
