If I see birds on the water when I enter the prairie I try to move to the east end of the pond for the best light. I don't have a fast lens so I feel that I need a sunlight. I then must be careful of exposure on the white parts. I use spot metering and dial in -1 exposure compensation to protect detail in the white.
I noticed that they seem to lean forward when swimming swiftly.
