Shadow Darner

Shadow Darner
I have been seeing these dragonflies flying around the vernal pool.  I could not get a good enough look at them until I got this shot to identify them.

I saw several exuvia a couple weeks ago and I am now thinking that they may have been those of this dragonfly instead of the Common Green Darner as I previously stated.

Dragonfly Exuvia
I have been unable to see an identified image of the Shadow Darner exuvia so I am cast adrift not knowing for sure.

Shadow Darner
They hover, giving the photographer an opportunity.  I have had just one session where I had this kind of opportunity.

Frog Pond

Frog Pond
The change of weather and the season is giving me opportunities to do landscape photography again.  I was thinking, the other day, that anything can be a subject as long as the light it doing something special to it.  The tree on the left edge of the copse of trees is separated from the forest behind by the aerial affect of the haze.  It causes that tree to stand out for me.

The frog pond has been mostly inaccessible lately.  The grass and cattails have grown up around it and in it.  There is really no way to see the water.  I knew there was clear water there because I saw ducks flying away as I approached the other day.  I "bushwhacked" down to the waters edge for this shot.

Trapped Insect

Long-jawed Orbweaver
I have read that the Long-jawed Orbweaver Spider is an effective predator of mosquitoes.  I have found what I believe to be mosquitoes trapped in their webs.

Trapped Insect
The mosquitoes were bad earlier in the summer when we had so many rains but have become less annoying since the rains have stopped.  I like it when the spiders eat them.

Red Dragonflies

Ruby Meadowhawk
These dragonflies are still flying (two weeks ago).  The are not large and are quite friendly.  I have had them land on my flash gun or shoulder.

Autumn Meadowhawk
I have started seeing the Autumn Meadowhawk, (two weeks ago).  They fly into November, sometimes.

Spider Webs and Dew

Dewy Spiderweb
Spider webs drenched in dew have been popular images in the past.  The droplets look like pearls on a necklace.  This one has mottled lighting on it which adds interest in my opinion.

Dewy Spiderweb
This is a vertical of the same web.  Focus can be affected by the slightest breeze.  It is a high contrast subject so one must be careful of exposure.  These two images can be printed at 12x18 and would make hansom prints to displey.

Closeups of Damselflies

Photographer Larry
I love to sit by the vernal pool and wait and watch.  The animals seem to get used to me and go about their activities.  I keep a Canon 500D closeup filter in my shirt pocket in case something lands too close.

Sweetflag Spreadwing Male
This damselfly landed too close for my macro lens so I attached the Canon 500D and kept shooting.  It was a more than frame filling image, so I shot two parts.

Sweetflag Spreadwing Male
I wonder if I had shot all of the insect, I could have combined the shots for a whole view.  Next time I will try to remember to try that.

Chocolate-brown Fishing Spider Web

Chocolate-brown Fishing Spider Female
I have observed the hole, to the rear of her body, for a week or more.  The hole, the opening, was and is lined with web.

Spider Hole

The newest addition is a web extending out from the floor of the hole.  I have read that they make nursery webs for the young.  I wonder if this may be that.  If it is, the adult female, at the top,  is on it in this shot.
