Chedder Pink

Chedder Pink
We have these growing beside the garage door now, 5-21-18.  They are at their peak and I decided to make a focus stack capture.

They are AKA Dianthus gratianopolitanus.  They are in the family: Caryophyllaceae.  The flowers are very fragrant.  They are native to Europe and Asia and related to Sweet William, Carnation and Pink.

Chedder Pink
This capture was also a focus stack done May 16, 2015.  I decided to shoot for reality today.  In the capture above I pushed the saturation slightly which is easy to do.  I hoped to gain a few sales by doing so.  I didn't have any sales and now I am back to creating reality as nearly as possible including white balance which the second one lacks.

Rutile

Rutile Needles
The Chemical formula is TiO2.  It is the most common of the titanium oxides.

It is used in the manufacture of optical elements, especially polarization optics.

Rutile Needles
The needles aren't as apparent in this view.  These samples come from Jones Mill Quary, Magnet Cove, Arkansas or Luzcan Talc Mine, St. Pierre, de Braughton, Quebec, Canada

Allium Giganteum

Allium gigantum

Allium gigantum, CKA Giant Onion, makes, in my opinion, a beautiful addition to landscaping.  It comes to us from Asia.  It is the tallest ornamental, almost 5'.  This sample comes from Kingwood Center in June of 2006.

This species has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Fluorapatite

Fluorapatite
This the one I consider second best to the one I showed previously.  It looks like it has cotton in the circle.  I tried to blow it out before each shot and it would not leave so I decided on this one to leave it as the most accurate representation of the mineral.

Fluorapatite
This one may be the one I showed previously.  I liked it the best.

Corn Planting Time

Corn Planting Rig
Father used to say it was time to plant corn when the dogwoods bloom.  It is that time of year just now.  These shots were captured 5-20-11.

Much like the season above, we had too much rain and too cool temperatures.  By the time of this writing, 5-12-18, things have dried out but I'm unsure about the soil temperature.  Carol drove to Mt. Vernon last week and reported seeing planting going on.  I think we are on the brink here.  I've been meaning to look around but haven't taken time.

John Deere 16 Row Planter
The above planter has CCS seed delivery.  It boasts blowers and vacuum blowers to move the seed.  The blowers are run by hydrolic motors.

John Deere 16 Row Planter
This planter carries lots of seed and liquid fertilizer.  Planting corn can be done quickly if you don't have to stop to load fertilizer and seed.  Dad stopped each round, 1 mile total, to add fertilizer and check seed in his John Deere two row planter.

John Deere Hydrolic Connections.

The planter also has hydrolic ram cylinders to lift the planter for transport and too move the markers and other things as needed.  They are attached to the massive, by Dad's standards, hydrolic system on this John Deere Tractor.

One important factor is keeping all hoses and other seed and fertilizer passages open.  They can become blocked and leave one or more rows unplanted.  It is a big job keeping an eye on things.  The planter and the tractor talk to each other so some of the work of checking can be done on the run.
