Booksmart Fine Art Metals Image complements of the Booksmart Web Site. |
My new Photo Technique Magazine arrived recently. I noted that Editor, Wendy Erickson, had written an article entitled "Untarnished Dreams: Metals for Digital Printing." I read it first and immediately entered my name in the raffle to win the sampler pictured above. The raffle entry time concludes at the end of April so there is still time for you.
I was so excited about the concept that I ordered the sampler. Each one is aluminum with a different finish. The aluminum sheets have been coated with a substrate which holds the ink from your printer. They came the other day and I cut a strip off one that was slightly over-sized. I was anxious to see how they could be "worked." (More about this in a later installment)

Metal Strip Laminated To Mat Backing |
You can order them with or without adhesive on the back. I ordered them with adhesive backing and wanting to see how the adhesive would hold. I worked on it a little and before I knew it the end of the day had arrived. I had a busy day the next day and had no time to work in the shop but I carried it around in my pocket all day, telling everyone I met about my new prints, coming soon.
The next day I finally had time to make the prints.

Metal Prints |
I downloaded an ICC Profile from the Booksmart Studio and used Photo Black Ink in my Epson R2880 Printer.
I had selected about 20 images for possible printing on the metal. I went to Booksmart Studio's web site reading and implementing their suggestions for the best image for each metal.
I was able to choose an image from my selection group for each metal finish except one. I had to look through my data base once again to find one for the Mat Silver Finish. I chose the Green Heron. It was a low light, high ISO, telephoto shot having nearly too much noise. I really liked its combination with the Mat Silver Finish metal. In my mind, it was a perfect match, the image complementing the metal finish.
