North American F-100 Super Sabre

North American F-100 Super Sabre
This is the fighter/bomber that was the first of the USAF fighters capable of supersonic flight on the level.  It was also the first of the Century Series of Fighters.  It was a follow up to the F-86.

It flew mainly over South Vietnam.  After the faster F-105 came along, some F-100's became Wild Weasel suppression aircraft.  It would fly ahead of the bomb laden F-105's taking out AAA guns and radar.

This shot shows the all moving horizontal stabilizer necessary for supersonic flight.  You may remember that the F-86 was, later in its service life, fitted with an all moving surface because it would go supersonic in a dive.  There is, yet, one modification for supersonic flight which we will discuss later.
