Gray Treefrog Recording

Gray Treefrog
I heard a call at the frog pond the other morning.  It came in short bursts.  Each burst was a little like a trill.  There were two, answering one another.  I tried to find the nearest one but to no avail.  It stopped calling when I got too close.  The far one continued calling.

I had not been aware of this call previously.  I sent a short 17 sec excerpt to Merrill Tawes, Ashland University, who identified it as a gray treefrog.  Thanks for you help, Merrill.

Listen to the excerpt.  It is at the bottom of the page.

Tree Swallow

Tree Swallow
These birds migrate from far to the south, maybe Central or South America.  They eat insects and fly over the pond darting after them.  They don't have blue feathers.  The feathers are iridescent which makes them look blue.  I think they are beautiful.

Flowering Dogwood

Flowering Dogwood
I missed one day at Gorman last weekend and when I returned the flowering dogwood was blooming everywhere.  I have noticed more of these plants this year than I have in the past.  I think they are beautiful and am always looking for a way to photograph them.  This one particular morning we had sun but it was filtered by clouds making the light less specular.  I made several shots of this bloom as the light changed.  This was one of the earlier ones.  I liked the back light on the petals.  The light on the leaves leads my eye in the the distance.  It makes this image dynamic.  In some of the later shots I did not like the shapes of the shadows on the back of the petals.  That was the deciding factor in my picking this one.

Stream Bed II

Stream Bed
The stream bed is lit like this at a certain time of the morning.  It only lasts a short time.  The sun moves behind two trees during this time and the trees cast shadows as you can see.

Stream Bed
I worked it a little, waiting on the sun to move the shadows.  I was thinking that I did not want the shadows in the center of the image.

Stream Bed
I captured these variations but then decided that I liked the first shot with the shadows best.  What do you think?

Gray Catbird Song

Gray Catbird
I heard a gray catbird singing the other morning.  It was an extended song and so beautiful!  I recorded it and am making it available at my website, larrysimages.com.  This is a 33 sec excerpt for your enjoyment.  It is the one at the bottom of the page.

Stream Bottom

Stream Bed
This is by bridge 2 at Gorman.  I like how the stream current makes shapes in the sand after a rain.  The light is setting this off as you can see.  The shadows require a polarizing filter to remove the sky reflection.  In this shot you can see the sky.  I think that the bright sun on the log is a little distracting.  It draws my eye second and almost seems to add confusion to the rest of the composition.

Acquatic Earthworms and Sow Bugs
These creatures are active in the depressions, as you can seem.  I had not realized the stream contained so many small living creatures until after I attended the

Stream Bed in Color
You can still see a little of the sky reflecting even after I used the circular polarizing filter.  Please note the raccoon tracks.  I settled on a composition a little further up stream for this one.  I had to wait for the light as the sun, in the east, moved between the trees.  I have since relocated the sticker bush whose shadow is so prominent in the left side.  I am waiting for another good rain to rearrange the sand again.  The sand is all under water in this image.

Stream Bed in B&W
I settled on a B&W conversion partly because I wanted to be sure that the sky reflection was not visible.  I really like this, even after a couple weeks.

Bluebirds, Bluebirds, Bluebirds

Eastern Bluebird
I know that many of you enjoy seeing the bluebirds.  I happened to capture a sequence of shots the other day that I thought you might enjoy seeing.

Finally Landed
Does anyone have a bluebird box at home?
