I observed that the buds open from the bottom to the top of the stalk.

I observed that the plants nearest the shore had finished blooming all together.

I observed that the plants further from the shore had buds which had not begun to open.

The buds on the stalk I was observing were open about half way up.

I read that is establishes itself a root system from which it grows.  I think the roots are called rhizomes.
