Gastropod Shell

I can envision a hermit crab walking around in this.  The original inhabitant was probably a sea snail.  I would say it had a good, solidly built, place in which to live.

The opening, called the aperture, is smooth and its size would indicate the snail was large. 

The shells can be right-hand or left-hand spirals.
