The adult male personifies its name because the abdomen is very white and thus quite visible. The female, not so much. I think that I have settled on viewing the breadth of the abdomen as my tip off. Previously, I might have mistaken this insect for a female twelve-spotted skimmer.
Notice the white edges on the upper segments of the abdomen and its width.
