Bird-of-Paradise

Bird-of-Paradise Bloom
Paradise is a concept revered by many of us.  To see such a bloom truly reminds me of paradise.  AKA, Strelitzia is is native to South Africa.  It is named for a bird by the same name.

I was wandering with my camera though the green house at Kingwood for several years.  These shots are from Dec. 23 2005.

Bird-of-Paradise Bloom
I think those may be banana leaves in the background.  I was fortunate enough on one visit to taste a banana grown there.  It tasted identical to the bananas in the grocery.

Thanks to Kingwood Center for the opportunity to capture these images.

Seasonal Decorations

Seasonal Decorations: Kingwood Greenhouse 11-3-27
I really appreciate periodic enhancement which puts forth the natural beauty of plants and not the decorations.  I would encourage you the visit Kingwood Center to see what they have done.  If my memory serves, Christmas is a little about angels.

Pink Angel's Trumpet
This is an evergreen plant whose flowers are somewhat similar to lilies, at least the shape.  It is extinct in the wild.  I suppose that means the only place it grows is in the greenhouse.

Thanks to Kingwood Center for the opportunity to capture these images.

The Wright Brothers: First in Powered Flight

Wright 1909 Military Flyer
Tomorrow is December 17, 2018.  We should probably pause to remember the first powered flight by Orville Wright.  It was at 10:30 AM Dec. 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.  It lasted 12 seconds and covered a distance of 120 feet.

Three more flights ensued that day, the longest of which was 852 feet, lasting 59 seconds.  The pilot was Wilbur Wright.

By 1909 their aircraft model A, seated the pilot on the wing instead of laying him flat as the first flyer did.  The Wights had matured with their aircraft to the point of selling it.  They did so in 1909 to the United States Army Air Force.  They initially were unable to find buyers so they stored it and went to Europe looking for potential customers.  I think the USAAF stepped when they returned to the US.

Pachypodium lameri

Pachypodium lameri
This image comes to us from Kingwood Center arid house in 11-6-07.  I was noticing that I have quit a few images from Nov., Dec., Jan. and Feb.  Most if not all come from the Green House at Kingwood.  If you miss flowers blooming this time of year you can seek an outlet from that location.

This plant is from Africa.  Pachypodium is a very adaptive house plant, it will take a wide range of temperature and light changes and adjusts accordingly.  The milky sap is poisonous to pets and people.

Thanks to Kingwood Center for the opportunity to capture this image.  Thanks to Wikipedia for the information provided.

Mitsubishi A6M2

Japanese Zero
The Zero was the best performing fighter at the beginning of WW II.  It is appropriate that we consider this aircraft on Dec. 7, the day we remember the attack on Pearl Harbor.  The attack was unexpected and inappropriately carried out while diplomacy ground ahead in Washington.  It was rightly considered an act of war by FDR and Congrass.  The USA teetered on the brink of entering the war and this pushed us into it.

Our best fighter at the time was the Curtis P-40, before we entered WWII, had been up against the Zero.  Flown by the Flying Tigers, flying in support of and from China were commanded by Claire ChennaultThe Flying Tigers, with the grinning or snarling teeth on their P-40 planes flew sorties against the Zero and learned tactics, such as "not trying to turn inside the Zero because the Zero could make a tighter turn."

Radio City Christmas

Radio City Christmas Spectacular
Carol and I traveled to Manhatten, New York City in November of 2002.  We were only there for 2 or 3 days.  We saw the Rockettes, and other entertainment which I don't remember.  I had to give up my camera at the ticket booth, which was not a comfortable circumstance for me.  I was on the line of leaving!  I think it was on that trip we saw the Lion King.  It was the day we arrived and I could barely stay awake.  I'd like to see it again when I could give it my full attention.

Autumn Flowers

Autumn Flowers

Autumn is in
full swing here in Mansfield.  Summer flowers are being frosted as we speak on 10-30-18.  By the time you read this, Fall flowers will be a memory.
This image is from Kingwood Center in November of 2007 in the green house.  These flowers will last longer in this setting compared to those outside.  Poinsettias may be next.

I think the grass makes a good backdrop.

Weloganite

Weloganite
Discovered in 1967 by Ann P. Sabina.  It is a rare mineral.  The type location and the "came from" moniker are the same:  Franco Quarry Montreal, Canada.

Weloganite

It was named after Sir William Edmond Logan of Montreal who lived during the 19th century.  He was the first director of the Geological Survey from 1842 - 1875.

Weloganite
It's chemical formula is Na2(Sr,Ca)3Zr(CO3)6·3H2O  There are very few places through out the world other than Montreal where it is found.

Bird Skeleton

bird skeleton
I found this on the shelf in the old Larry's Images workroom.  I am sure that I laid it there with the intention of photographing it.

Eye Socket
I went through all of my bird identification guides but could not find a bird with a beak looking like this one.  The colored part of the beak measures 25mm.

Spinal Segment
I think that next thing for me to do is turn it in at Gorman even though I don't think it came from there.  For some reason, Lake Erie comes to mind.  I seem to remember there is a law about that.
