Great-spangled Fritillary Butterfly

Great-spangled Fritillary Butterfly
In addition to sipping nectar this butterfly also sips salts.  It is a lovely butterfly.

Great-spangled Fritillary Butterfly
This one was sipping salts of dog droppings.

Great-spangled Fritillary Butterfly
I devised a way to photograph it at ground level since it was so tame.

Great-spangled Fritillary Butterfly
I was trying to get closer when it decided to fly away.  Oh well, perhaps another day.

Unicorn Clubtail Dragonfly

Unicorn Clubtail Dragonfly
Jan Swartz alerted me to the presence of this dragon fly.  Thanks, Jan.

I was previously unaware of this one and had no images in my collection.  Now, I have a lot.

Unicorn Clubtail Dragonfly
These images are of the male.  I have seen a female which was ovipositing next to the shore, 6".  I am sure it was the female because the book said that is her behavior.  She was so quick that I could not really see her as my vision is not as quick as it once was.

Unicorn Clubtail Dragonfly
The graspers on the last segment look intimidating.

I have seen these dragonflies at the big pond and at the vernal down before the covered bridge.

Eastern Comma Butterfly

Eastern Comma Butterfly
This butterfly is among the salts sippers.  It was a warm morning and the butterfly was sipping salts from between the small stones.

Eastern Comma Butterfly
The stones catch the sun's warmth and are a pleasant place for the butterfly.

Eastern Comma Butterfly
I must show you this shot for ID purposes.  Can you see the comma?  It is on the underneath of both rear wings.

Prairie False Indigo

Bumble Bee
The Prairie False Indigo, as I write, is in full bloom.

Prairie False Indigo
The individual blooms, may be called bracts, resemble a snap dragon.  They also function the same as you can see from the top image.   The bees much exert some effort to get to the nectar.  (Look for the video at the bottom of the page.)
