Great Golden Digger Wasp

Great Golden Digger Wasp
This is another "house cleaning" insect.

Great Golden Digger Wasp
I am afraid insect shooting is gone for this season.  I shall miss it.  I have photographed a late season dragonfly this late.  I must go at a different time of day to photograph insects, though and I love the sunrise light so I am ambivalent.

Indian Grass

Indian Grass
This image came from the Sunlight/shadow Transition Zone.

Indian Grass
As I am sure you can see, the first is without flair and the second is with.  Flair removal was accomplished in this case by shielding the lens from the direct sunlight.  Sometimes I wish my lens shade to be larger.  I know it is made that size so as to prevent vignetting.

Apple Maggot Fly

Apple Maggot Fly
I am cleaning house in my "for blog" folder.  This is one from late last summer.  I thought it interesting and unique.

Invasive Plant ID and Removal Workshop

Gorman Nature Center
The nature center recently held an Invasive Plant ID and Removal Workshop.  This shot was captured the next day.  It looked to me like some of the woody plants had been removed from the prairie.

Shredded Woody Plants
I assume that this is the output of the shredder after the workshop.

Mini Puffball Mushroom

Mini Puffball Mushroom
I found this on a day when it was too windy to photograph much else.  I added a little flash on the left for lighting interest.  I used a Stoffen Diffuser on the flash.  I used the CamRanger and step medium, f/5.6.  The flash was about 2.5 feet from the subject and set on fec = -2.  It was a 42 image stack.

Beyond the Downed Tree

Tepee
I have seen the beginnings of tepees around the forest but this one looks ready to move in.  It needs canvas or something to shed rain.  There is no sign of habitation that I can see.

Tepee Inside
I assume it is built solidly but I did not enter.

Not far from the tepee was my objective, the spring.

Boardwalk
I felt sure that this was the place the outflow of the spring crossed the trail when I looked to my right and saw a decidedly light place.

Spring Area
I walked into the light area.  It is covered with plants liking the open sun.  It looked to me like it could be a pool in different seasons.  I must return to see.  Not far beyond this area a trail goes off to the left.  I think that it is the one which crosses the stream at bridge 8.  I hope to walk it some time soon.

Not far beyond this spot is the end of Gorman Nature Center property.  I think that is the case because I found a wire fence mashed down.

Spring Ridge Trail

Downed Tree
I start walking on the forest trails this time of year.  I have wanted to seek out the spring which was, for me, the mythical beginning of our stream.  I had only heard of it and seen it on the map, but had not been there.  I go into the forest looking for mushrooms to photograph.  The forest is difficult to impossible for me to navigate pulling my little cart.  I had always thought that I would have to attempt to find the spring by walking up the stream without the cart.

I walked in at the above entrance, near the wildlife tower, looking for mushrooms the other day.  I was surprised, it had been years since I was there, to note that one of my favorite trees had fallen.  It was a huge tree.

Downed Top of Tree
You can see the downed crooked limb behind my head, probably not good image composition.  You can see the size of the trunk, since I am sitting on it.

Canopy
You can also get a feel for the significance of this tree in this location.  It left a huge opening in the canopy.

False Turkey-tail
It was on limbs from this tree I photographed the fungus.

I left this site moving further back searching for more mushrooms.  I will show you other things I saw tomorrow.
