Flower ID

New England Aster
I think that I am learning to photograph wild flowers so that I can ID them later in Newcomb's book.  I can't think why it has taken me so long.  I was photographing bees on this aster and decided to confirm what kind it was.  I shot the bloom.  That is the easy part.

New England Aster
I photographed the stalk and leaf arrangement on it.

New England Aster
I photographed a leaf to view the leaf edges.  My ID was easy and certain after I got to looking in the asters which I knew it was.

Differential Grasshopper

Differential Grasshopper
With the on-slot of autumn, I have trouble finding insects to photograph.  This grasshopper evidently stayed on this plant all night.  It was very still.  I decided to see if I could make a focus stack of it.  This is the result.  I noticed while processing the image that it lacked a left hind leg.

Differential Grasshopper
I think that my warm breath was warming the insect.  It moved only one antenna during this series and I was able to clean it up.  The third series was unusable.

Photographing in an Aquarium

Gus the Yellow-bellied Slider
Caleb seemed pleased for me to photograph his pet turtle.  I made this capture with the Samsung Galaxy S4, no flash.

Gus the Yellow-bellied Slider
I decided to try my "big boy" camera on Gus.  I soon discovered that I needed flash.  I set up one at the end of the 70 gal. aquarium and made this shot.  Obviously, I needed another flash from above the surface.  The surface seems to act like a mirror and the light does not pass through.  Next time I want to try it with two flashes.  This time, we had to leave for a game.

Bonus (for me) Run

Caleb (in yellow) Running at Beginning of the Race
I think that these races were done by the Phys. Ed. classes.  Caleb is in 5th grade.

Caleb Running at End of Race.
I like to look at the expression of the runner to tell how it is for him/her.  Caleb did a good job.

Reed, in gray with red hair,  Running at the Beginning of the Race
Reed's Phys. Ed. class is a 7/8 class.  Reed is in the 7th grade.  He looks confident.

Reed Running at the End of the Race
Notice that there is no one near him.  He finished first.

Soccer in Dayton

Evie Playing Soccer
This is video I captured with my Samsung Galaxy S4.  Evie did a good job.

Larry and Caleb
Caleb's game was finished at dusk as you can see.  Carrie took this.  He did a good job but needs to be more aggressive.

Larry & Reed
You should notice that Reed is as tall as or taller than I currently.  Reed did a good job too.

I was glad I got to go.  I drove myself both ways.

National Museum of the USAF

Larry & Carrie
My daughter and I recently visited the NMUSAF.  I wanted to experiment with the CamRanger.  In this image I am holding my phone from which I made this capture.

Douglas VC-118 Independance
The VC-118, aka DC-6 was the replacement for the VC-54C.  It was the aircraft to which Harry S. Truman, as President of the United States, migrated from the VC-54C.

Douglas VC=54C Sacred Cow
This is the aircraft in which Harry S. Truman signed into existence the USAF.

FDR used it previously.  It had an elevator which lifted him in a special narrow wheelchair into the plane.

Lockheed VC-121E Columbine III
The C-121 is the military version of the famed Constellation commercial transport, notice the three vertical stabilizers.  It was the plane of Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Boeing VC-127C Sam 26000 Air Force One
This aircraft flew John F. Kennedy's body from Dallas to Washington.  It was built in 1962 flying many US Presidents.  The civilian designation for this aircraft was Boeing 707-320B.

I came to terms with the CamRanger during this outing.  Still photography in this setting is decidedly a challenge and I did not produce any images which I consider even good.  I may be able to rework some next winter but maybe only one or two.

The CamRanger made a choice for me which I did not appreciate.  I had come to use ISO 800 and five captures with 2 stop range when shooting HDR manually.  That would be five captures to be processed later.  The CamRanger did not make available 5 captures always.  It went a step further and evaluated the needed number.  Sometimes it was less.  I could always eliminate any I did not need with manual shooting.
