Nesting Tree Swallows

Nesting Tree Swallow
I can't tell the male from the female but I enjoying seeing their activity

Nesting Tree Swallow
I thought that it would be difficult to capture images like these.  I did not know when the bird would exit.

Nesting Tree Swallow
It happens quickly.

Nesting Tree Swallow
I don't know if any eggs were laid.  I don't know if the bird is going for more nest building materials or food for itself or babies.

Tree Swallow Nest Building

Tree Swallow Building Nest
I think this is box #2.  I wish the number was on both sides.

I sat observing this bird building a nest.

Tree Swallow Building Nest
It was fun watching the work.

Even the mate got into the act.  I wish I could understand tree swallowese because I can only imagine what is being said!

Striped Saddlebags

Striped Saddlebags
This dragonfly is listed in Dragonflies and Damselfies of Northeast Ohio under "Accidental and Historical Species."

The book states that "This species is known to stray from its South Texas haunts."  I had never seen one and would not have identified it without the picture.  The large spot on the rear wings caused it to look larger than it is while in flight.  It flew by me and landed on the reed.  I used my Sigma 50 - 500 mm lens for the shots.  I approached it like I would a bird taking a shot every few steps.

I hope that Judy Semroc and Larry Rosche see this.

Canada Geese and Goslings

Canada Goose Family
We had a cool morning, in the 40's, the other day and I saw this flock of geese out for a swim on the pond.

Nate's Birthday Party

Nancy, Steve and Grandchildren
Hannah and Nathan were in Beavercreek recently for a few days.  Nate had a birthday pool party while there.  Nancy and Steve, very graciously invited me to attend.  I don't get to Nashville any more and do not see Hannah and Nathan much.  I was so grateful to see all the children together.  Hannah and Nate are growing up quickly.  Hannah recently took a class in photography and we had a nice conversation about it.  She tells me she is getting close to the age to get her driving permit.

Megan, Lucas and Loudon took me to Beavercreek, for which I am also very grateful.

The kids had lots of fun together! Grandpa Larry enjoyed watching.

Red-winged Blackbirds

Red-winged Blackbird Male
I am paying close attention to the edges of the pond these days because I am looking for dragonfly exuvia and dragonflies themselves.  The blackbirds feel protective of their nests near the edge of the pond when I am present.  They become quite aggressive.

Red-winged Blackbird Male
They make a face and sound put-offish.  They want me to leave.

Red-winged Blackbird Male
They fly at me.  I do not usually look up.  I just happened to catch this one.  It might have been that same morning that I felt wind from his wings on the back of my neck.  He must have been pretty close.

Red-winged Blackbird Male
Their nesting behavior does give me the opportunity to capture images of them that I could not capture at other times of year.    I like to look at them up close.  I hope that you do too.
