Lichen on a Pine

Lichen on a Pine
I happened to be looking at this pine the other morning and noticed this Foliose Lichen growing on it.  I have noticed it growing on dead logs but this was something new for me.  I like the color of this lichen and I thought the contrast of color and texture with the tree captivating.

Rock & Moss

Granite & Moss
I liked the patterns of the moss on this rock.  The grayish background sets off the moss.  There is some lichen growing on this rock too, top left.  I have read that moss and fungus work together to form lichen.  How interesting!

Ice and Goose

Canadian Goose
The pond had a thin film of ice the other morning.  I noticed that a goose was sitting on the pond at the other end.  It looked like the ice was holding the goose in.  As I approached, the goose became more agitated.  It started bumping against the edges of the ice and breaking it away.  I was curious to see if it could fly out.  It finally did.  It did not seem to have a problem with the takeoff.

Obsidian

Obsidian
What a treasure, that  box of rocks from the Lithic & Lapidary Society!  I found this obsidian in it.  Obsidian, aka volcano glass, is formed when lava cools quickly, not crystallizing, and forms glass.  It is usually black but can have streaks and spots in it.  I has a certain translucency to it.  This was one of my first efforts to photograph this piece of rock.  I soon decided that I could do better.

Obsidian
This shot showed the translucency well but was lacking in the area of showing surface detail.  I decided that I wanted both.

Obsidian
This is the shot I liked.  I thought that I made the ultimate capture.  It did not loose all the translucency and still shows the surface detail.

Setup
This is the setup that I used.  I discovered, when charging batteries, that the top flash was set on the wrong channel and did not flash.  At least I think that was the one.  I should have "read" it as I looked at the image shot, that I only had two flashing.  I think that the next step will be to set it up again and try it with the setup shown with all working.  I may do the other side of the rock and then video it.

I liked the last one, number three above, the best.  I thought I had captured the ultimate image.  I used Helicon Focus to create it.  I still like it a lot but now I wonder if I can do better, yet.  Time will tell.

Moss and Lichen Covered Rock

Moss and Lichen Covered Rock
The weather was spring like and the birds were singing.  I decided to make an audio recording and revisited this rock while that was happening.  You may remember a previous shot of it.  I am intrigued by the patterns of the moss growing over the lichen covered rock.

Moss and Lichen Covered Rock
This shot is from a little different angle than the previous one.   It is a wider shot.  I like the depression running through the rock and the two colors with the accent color. The contrast of the texture of the lichen with the patterns of the moss are appealing to me.
