Coal is coalified plant material according to the slip accompanying the sample.
This sample came from the Blackhawk Formation in Wasatch Plateau, Utah. The Cretaceous Period is mentioned as its time. That would be 145 to 66 Ma, i.g. million years ago. The dinosaurs were alive during that period.
