Umbrella Inky Cap Mushroom

Umbrella Inky Cap Mushroom
This individual measured 5/8" across.

A mushroom is asexual, i.e. it produces spores instead of eggs.  When this mushroom fruits, i.e. drops its mature spores, it then self decomposes.  It forms at night after a rain and will not last through the following day.  If it does not fruit quickly enough, it dries up when the sun hits it.

It grows on the grassy trails at Gorman.  You must get there early to see it.  If I am late, I look in shady places.
